Raising rule?

Posted Fri Sep 17, 2004 9:24 am GMT by markball
What is the rule on raising in a no limit holdem game? Say the blinds are 10-20...I know the minimum bet after the flop is 20, but after that is there a minimum raise? Do you have to raise another 20, or can you raise 1?

The raise must be at least the size of the big blind. So it would have to be raised to at least $40.

However, if someone bets ahead of you, a raise must be AT LEAST the amount of that bet. Example:

10/20 blinds. (A) bets 20, any raise by you must be at least 20.
10/20 blinds. (A) bets 50, any raise by you must be at least 50.

You can raise 1, but only if that is an all in.

hehehehehe. good point. but a bet of 1 with a BB of 50 would not be a raise. hehehehehe.

51 would be though.

Bingo, I had to fight hard to get this rule instated in our home game. I explained it wasn't a house rule, but a basic rule of poker. There is nothing worse than wanting to call the first guys bet only to have the next guy raise it $1...which is just a free card for the original better to go nuts. If I see a raise and reraise I want to know it's a good move to lay my cards down, not wonder if the original guy will just call the $1 or go nuts.

Speaking of the all in slight raise, is there an official rule about that being considered a raise, so the original raiser can then raise again if their is a third player in the pot, or does the raise have to be at least say half of the original raise for the first raiser to be allowed to raise again?

I know anyone else can raise all they'd like but the orignal better I'm not sure about.

Can i also just point out that a well used "non-minimum" raise can be an incredibly effective weapon
I was watching LNP the other night and the flop came, someone made a raise, say 175, the other guy, forget his name, announced raise 325, now the TD was on the ball and spotted right away that he couldn't raise only 325 so he was compelled to only call the original bet. This completely threw the original raiser for a loop and of course he checks the turn, player 2 then checks also! so he effectively got himself a free card on the river, bet at it and took the pot down.

Now the commentators were like, did he mean that or not, regardless of if he did or not, the fact that he was "penalised" by only being allowed to call rather than being forced to put in his full raise certainly helped him throw the original bettor for a loop.

am i just confusing the issue now?

I thought if you verbally announced you were raising, and din't put enough chips in for the minimum, that you would have to fork over the extra chips? So instead of making that guy put in 350 instead of 325, they made him call? Strange.

Yeah this is what i thought also, but i think the distinction is that he announced 325 rather than just raise. so they were like "uh you can't do that" and he was like "uhh ok then"
