AKs or TT (Hand Rankings)

Posted Sat Sep 18, 2004 8:45 am GMT by wEbMaStEr
Sklansky ranks the top starting hands as

AA
KK
QQ
AKs
AQs
JJ
KQs
AJs
KJs
AKos

Ok? seems reasonable?
Yet i was reading something by TJ Cloutier and he says HE ranks the hands as follows...

AA
KK
QQ
JJ
TT
AKs

Quite a difference.
TT is not even in Sklanskys top 10 yet Cloutier would put it 5th AKs is Sklanskys 4th best hand, but Cloutier puts it behind a hand that isn't even in Sklansky's top 10!

So who is right?

Cardplayer.com's poker odds calculator puts the odds of AKs v TT (different suits) at Aks 46.1% and TT 53.9% for heads up 5 handed with the other 3 having rags, TT is still a favourite.

So Cloutier is correct and TT dominates AKs?

my take on sklansky is, suited high connectors are worth because of the high flush, straight, and pair possibilities, can even win on a high card.

All decent points in a somewhat passive game, particularly short-handed.

I think TJ's point is that high wired pairs are already made and don't need improvement. That means if the flop misses, u still have a lot of manuverability. High suited connectors lead to the classic dominated situation where K-J vs Q-J can lead to trouble.

Hands like KJ suited are worth a call in EP but I don't think it merits a raise in a fairly loose game, like a casino's week-end low-limit table.

Who's right and who's wrong? I'd probably listen to the guy who has the most tourney wins. Theoritcal discussions are good but real experience is what gets that paper.

I'd take the tens oves AKs any day of the week.

1) It's already a made hand, there are only 4 better
2) If you hit your set, there is more potential to get paid to get paid.

How much do you expect to get paid if you flop the nut flush? Best case is if two to the flush comes out and you hang in there til the third hits.

What if you raised pre flop and the flop came J10x, with two to your suit showing? Now lets say the turn comes A and matching the other suti? You now have top pair with a King kicker but are staring at another flush draw and it's quite possible somebody called your raise preflop with KQ and made the nut straight.

Just my 2c

I am sure a lot depends on limit or NL, tourney or ring game. In a NL short handed game, give me 10 10 anytime. In a full table of a limit cash game, AK is much better IMO.

Thats a good point for limit games. I just look at stuff from a tourney aspect, it's all I play for now. In a limit game, you'll probably have the right odds to call/bet it all the way to the river.

In Doyles book Super System, he says he'd rather have AK than AA or KK. This is for a good reason. With AA or KK you are usually going to win a little or lose a lot. (Like you go all-in and everyone fold or someone calls you and they get there set)

But with AK, it's a lot easier to fold if you don't get anything on the flop.

There more to his logic and you'd have to read his book.

I might had, it is the best book I've read for NL Tournements and since I read it, I'm doing a lot better. The last 7 tourneys I've entered, I've won 5! (10-12 people tourneys but I still come away with some good cash)
