Set blinders

hey all,

decided to pony up and register after lurking on these forums to tell the expensive lesson i learned last night. so i guess a little background first: this was at a local card room and i was sitting at the 6/12 table. i was having a damn good run - got paid off a huge pot when i floped the nut straight and was getting tons of action.

i took a break after a hand i thought i played too "cute" (implications for the following beat): pf - mid position just called with JJ, bb raises and i just call the raise with 1 person calling behind me.

flop comes 7 7 A - bb checks, with 1 overcard I bet it, guy behind me calls and bb calls. Turn comes 7, checks around, river is a rag bb checks, i check, last guy bets, bb calls, i call. he turns up A 8 off. So I was a bit pissed at myself because I knew i had the bb beat (he was playing pretty loose so I put him on something like mid pair or mid-high suited connector 910 jQ etc). i think i really should of 3 bet the pf and I'm pretty sure the guy behind me would have folded his A 8 off with a raise and a reraise... so after playing JJ to stupidly. I come back to the table ready to battle again.

When I got back a new player was at the table. He was a pretty regular 20/40 player (lets call him Bob). so heres the action on the ensuing hand:
same bb from previous (lets call him Al) was utg and raised pf, i squeeze to find... bingo JJ (my redemption hand), I make it 3 bets with the 20/40 player (Bob) on the button calling my 3 bets, Al calls as well. At this point I put Al on something like AJ, AQ, AK - I wasnt exactly sure what Bob was holding. Flop: Js 8s 5d - bingo bango, fireworks going off in my head, Al checks, I bet for the 2 spades on the board, Bob raises behind me, Al calls the raise, I make it 3 bets, it gets called around.

Now from the raise, i put bob on maybe an overpair QQ. Turn comes 7c: fireworks are still going on in my head, Al checks, I bet, Bob raises - at this point im giddy and am ready to raise without really thinking -- as my chips were already out in front of me, Al notices this and folds - i make it 3 bets -- Bob thinks a bit - says "somebody got pocket jacks over there" and calls my raise.

at this point, huge warning signals should have been going off in my head - the raise from the button with the turn should have slowed me up considerably, but i wasn't really thinking at this point - my mind was just on the huge pot infront of me and my amazing flop. River - 10s at this point, this card made me frown. but luckily it saved me 12 bux... i checked it, bob bets, i call.... bob turns over..... 4 6 off! i tossed up my pocket jacks in disgust. really bob, 4 6 off with 3 bet on pf? unbelievable

so from hindsight i made a couple costly mistakes and lost a good amount of money -- when the turn came and bob raised, i should of slowed up... from every turn of the card my nut hand was getting worse and worse: best hand -> 3rd best -> 6th best. so guys... when your pocket pair hits a set dont stop thinking, don't let your mind go into autopilot betting... i still left the table up, but after that i was completely demoralized... sorry this took so long, just had to vent Razz

Horribly stupid to call 3 pf bets on 36o. No way in the world you can put anybody on THAT hand. But you should have seen the straight coming. There are a few suited connectors that would have explained everything he did--especially from the point of view of his being a 20/40 guy--your pf raise makes it $18 to call and that's not even his normal big bline. He's obviously thinking "Well I KNOW this guy's got his big pair or AK/AQ. If rags flop and I make 2pr, trips, or the straight, he's paying me to the river..."

ed: example is 89 suited...a good player way under his normal limit would take a peek at the flop for three bets with that hand especially when he's got you on high cards...you can come up with several others...
