Requesting an Interpreter

Posted Tue Sep 21, 2004 4:41 pm GMT by Twig Hunter
I play texas hold'em regularly, every thursdays to be precise, at a friends apartment. Ive gotten quite fond of the game and I want to test my skills in a casino so I'm planning on going to las vegas sometime in the next 6 months to play in a texas hold'em tourney but I'm faced with a dilemma;

I'm deaf so I'm wondering if casinos can provide me an interpeter at a table in case I have questions about the game or to keep me informed of whats going on in the game. Sure, I can get along without an interpreter because I can just tap on the table to call, move my cards away to fold, and make a pushing motion to go 'all in', but I need to know how much somebody else is betting, if theyre reraising, by how much, or what the big and small blinds are set at- just little things like that.

One q thats unrelated to poker or interpreters- can you get on a casino's comp list at a texas holdem table?

I would think if you have an interpreter that could come with you, you could have him/her sit behind you at the table (or next to you if they're a player, too). You'd probably have to clear it through the poker room supervisor first, but I don't know why it would be a problem, as long as you're not discussing the cards. You'd probably have a hard time getting the casino to provide you with one, though.

I don't think you rate for comps playing poker, although a lot of poker rooms have free food for players.

If you sat down at my table and the floor came over and told us what was up, I think it would be pretty easy to come up with hand signals for you. One thumb up for raise, two-thumbs up for reraise, fingers for amounts. People in general, are quite understanding about this sort of thing, I think. Heck, it might be fun to bring along a small hand-held whiteboard, and eraser, and a marker. Make it easy, fun and pleasant for the other players and the casino wouldn't even be an issue.

Good point, Rev. I think most players would be ok helping him out.

It think your actions speak loud and clear:

If you are attentive; you can jus physically place a bet/raise or muck your hand...
...when i play at a casino....i hardly ever need to speak at all!

And with a few universal hand signals; i'm sure the dealer will "understand" you...

They can't bar you from playing becuz of your disability...so i would recommend that you give it a shot!

And even better, have someone sitting behind you to help you out....your allowed to do that....
...i can't tell you how many girlfriend&wives i've seen sitting behind their man!!!

Good luck and kick some arse! Wink

i dont speak much either at the table, but he wasnt asking about talking, he was asking bout hearing other players raise and what not. If your playing at limit tables, just keep an eye out when its that persons turn to act, usually the dealer follows it around the table. But i dont see why they wouldnt help you, most limit tables are pretty friendly, sometimes i wish i could tune out other players cause some just never shut-up.
