Help with NL tournaments

Posted Sun Sep 26, 2004 6:11 pm GMT by supda
Hi, I've been playing nl holdem for over a year. I play mostly tournies with my friends. Next week, I'm going to be playing in a 15 to 18 player tourney. It's 20 dollars for a seat, and we usually split into 2 or 3 tables before we make the final table after enough players are knocked out. We play with .25/.50 blinds that increase everytime a few players are knocked out (.50, $1, then $1, $2, then etc). Even though we ony get 20 dollars in chips, many of the players are quite aggresive and loose. Almost of of them will call once they are pot committed. None of them use pot odds or anything like that, but some of them have read Brunson's Super System and some other books.

Here is how I usually play:

I usually wait for the premium hands (and I limp in with ALL low pocket pairs) in the beginning of the tourney and play them aggresively once I get them. Most of the times, this is enough for me to get into the final table. However, I'm never chip leader, because it's usually always some very loose aggressive player that played extremely aggressive and managed to knock a few players out completely with some luck. At the final table, I once again wait for the best hands, but by this time, the blinds are usually $2/4 or higher and my stack is usually around 75 or so. Soon, I'm shortstacked and I am forced to go all in and I lose, and end up with like a 4th or 5th place finish. Could anyone give me some advice or tips on how I should change my playing style? All help is appreciated. Thanks!

(Btw, if you have any questions, you can just ask them, my explanation may have been hard to understand)

You can get by by only playing those premium hands...But you are probably only betting when you have a favorable flop. Next time you play, try to buy a couple of pots. Occasionally try to steal the blinds from late position. Also try coming over the top with a re-raise if you see a weak bet after a rag flop. If you play with the same group of guys they probably know that you play tight and will only make a big raise if you have something. You will Occasionally get called or raised back, but in the long run you will win more than you will lose, and this should help you keep a decent size chip count going into the final table.
