Starting to Keep Track

Posted Wed Sep 29, 2004 4:28 pm GMT by ilikepoker
Not sure if this belongs in Beginner's Questions or what.

I am starting to take some notes to see where and what my best game is and possibly try to figure out an expected hourly rate, though I dont intend on basing any of my decisions on that hourly rate. It is mostly to try to see what kind of lobby decisions I can best make (ie game, seats, average pot).

I would think I am missing some useful catagories because I just got these from the top of my head.

Here's what I have already:

    Time /Date
    Site
    Table (fixed, NL, limits, no of seats)
    Seats Notes (shorthanded, longhanded, not constant, etc.)
    Table’s average pot size when sat down
    Tables average pot size when leaving
    $ Brought in
    $ Taken away
    I Played… (loose, tight, over aggressive, on tilt, etc.)
    Other Notes

Does anyone have any suggestions of what else to keep track of? Is there other data to enter that will be useful? This is just the beginning. Pokertracker is next. Another question I had was: before I bite, is there anything that is like pokertracker and is free?

Thanks for any suggestions at all!

I'm with ORG here. I've been using it for a year now and it does keep up with most of what you listed.

Thanks a lot for the suggestion.

When I went there, to my surprise, I found I had already signed up. So I took another look and remembered that when I looked last time I just thought it was a lot of entering data that other programs like pokertracker did automatically. But you guys recommend it huh? Eventually, once my bankroll is big enough to justify spending from it, I'll get pokertracker because it looks absolutely great. Meanwhile, though, is there stuff in pokercharts.com that you think will be useful above and beyond what I can just see from my own charts? I guess they would do all the math for you, but what kind of things do they tell you? Do they tell you what time of day you play best and which games to choose to get the best bang for my buck etc. And is it really worth imputing your data to the site every time you play?

Meanwhile I have modified my list a little to include the statistics I found provided at empire which are hands played, hands won, showdowns won, flops seen, and win % of flops.

If you think I should go for pokercharts.com even though I am prepared to make my own charts and you think it is worth the effort, I will try. But if you think my own handwritten charts will be enough, maybe you could tell me some of the more useful things that pokercharts.com tracks?

Thanks again for the responses.

It's really up to you. If you don't mind writing and computing the data yourself then keep at it. My advice is start logging your sessions at pokercharts and see how you like it. If you find that it doesn't track all the things you want then stop using it. It's free so no harm in testing. I don't keep up with a lot of the things you listed so I'm not sure if pokercharts tracks them. Mess around with it and see what you think.
