Depending on how many opponents still left in the hand and what type of players it is I make my decision...
44 for example is not very good against 5 opponents and I just call the BB hoping to hit the set. If I don't then I fold to almost any bet post flop..
Against 1 or 2 players 44 is somewhat better so sometimes I raise preflopp.
I don't know the exact percentage, but I know it's quite high, that someone else has gotten a pocket pair. And if yours is low... there's a good chance his pockets is higher than yours..
To sum up: With many opponents I only call BB preflopp and if I don't hit anything I fold quickly, but with few I play it more agressive..

Basically you are on a long shot with low pairs. I've found that I tend to hit straights with them more than sets.
See the flop cheap if you have a straight draw and your one or two opponents are checking - then put a reasonable bet out there. Low pairs are really only good if the flop comes in low. 44 is great when the flop comes in 3-6-7 rainbow. Chances are that if you are in cheap the others will be playing A-small suited or two faces. One bet would probably scare off the faces and your only danger is the A-small catching his small card or a runner runner flush.

of course it all depends on the situation but generally speaking i'll try to see a cheap flop. usually in a cash game if im in early position with 22 through 99 i'll just limp hoping to catch a set. if im first in, in middle position i'll bring it in for a raise just to try to steal blinds or get head up with another player.

That's the thing; you might be able to raise out people on a draw with a raise, but if you don't hit, you've probably thrown a couple of bets away.
I'm generally in the "get in cheap and fold" camp until it's shorthanded. But, sometimes I'll mix it up and raise with a small pair.
Presto good!

1 IN 17 to get pocket pairs. Best bet is to try to see the flop with a lot of callers so you are getting good pot odds to hit your set. In a no limit game these are ok for a coin-flip against ak aq kq kj. Best bet is to fold them out of position, or call in late position if there are a few callers before you.
