Last night I was in a hold 'em game with my girlfriend and her family. As it happened, the five up cards were a full house. They tried to convince me that they could then use the two down cards to decide the winner. (one had an 8 one had a 6) I told them there was no way they could use 6 cards in a hand...poker is a 5 card game. Was I right?

Yes, absolutely, best 5 cards win.

If the board was JJJ99 and someone had 10 10 QQ KK or AA, then that would be different. If nobody's hole cards improve the board, then the board plays and all players remaining in the hand win the pot.

This reminds me, I was playing a multi before leaving for Vegas and I folded a royal flush. In fact, 2 players had the royal....board was

you were 100% right and don't let them tell you otherwise. unless someone hole cards improve the board it's a split. 5 cards and ONLY 5 cards.

The only way you can use more than 5 cards is if your playing newbies and you want to steal there money so you lie to them. Other than that its the best 5 cards even if they are just the board.

Or if it's the rule at that table - if it's a house rule, because they don't like chopped pots. But the "Default" rule is that five cards make a hand.

You still flip the pockets tho - someone might have another jack, or a higher pair, like people said.
