No limit betting limits

Posted Thu Oct 14, 2004 11:34 pm GMT by SuitedAces
Hi,

It's been about a decade since I played no limit hold em (back in the navy) so please forgive my newbie question.

Example 1: If the small blind is 50 and the big blind is 100, then the minimum bet someone can place is 100, assuming they are playing before the blinds. But are there other restrictions upon the bet? Could they bet 101, thus raising the big blind by $1?

I think there is also a rule that, during a round of betting, if you are going to raise, then it has to be at least as big as the previous bet. So if someone bet 50, and you want to raise, your minimum raise must be 50. Right?

So in Ex. 1, then the person who is betting before it has gotten around to the blinds is basically raising the person who has posted the big blind, so they can bet 100, or raise to 200. Right? And anything beyond 200 is fair game. They could bet 201, or 21,672. There are no limits on that. Or are there?

Example 2. Blinds are 50/100, and before the flop the last raise was 1,000 and two people called it. After the flop, the betting starts to the left of the dealer. What limits are in place now? 100 minimum, based on the big blind? Is 101 okay? The 1,000 from the previous round has been erased, right?

Thanks to any friendly helpers out there,

Steve

I believe all minimum bets and raises are = to the big blind. I don't think there is any rule that says that you have to bet in denominations of the big blind. Correct me if I'm wrong guys.

Any bet must be at least the big blind. Any raise must be at least what the last bet was. So no, if someone bets $100 you can't raise it to $101. You have to go to at least $200. The part that most people get confused on is if it was raised to say $300, that was a $200 raise so the next raise would have to be at least $200 more.

no you can't raise it "to" 101, but you can call the 100 and raise 101. that's all i meant.
