hi. im semi new to hold em, and i just purchased a relativly cheap poker set. It has only 3 colors of chips. Im trying to keep things simple, only playing for fun with a few friends. how should i divide the chips up and what should they be worth? ive seen some poker on tv where they only use 2 colors. like i said before, im trying to keep it simple, this is just for fun.

if it is simple and just for fun, then it could be anything. you could make them anything. it would more depend on what you are planning on playing. nl holdem? limit holdem, etc

Divide all the chips evenly and make the denominations $5, $25, and $100.

Raise the blinds every 20 minutes with this structure:
10/20 15/30 20/40 25/50 50/100 150/300 200/400 250/500

You never said how many of each color you have but if each player gets at least $1000 in chips this should last around three hours with 5 people or so.

Good luck and make sure everyone is on the same track with the rules because it can get sticky when it comes to rules even if it's for "fun".

What if I want to keep it REALLY simple and use only two colors since I'm playing with a lot of first time players? How would I divide that up with 5-7 players?

me and my buddies have three colours, one 10cents, 25cents, and 50cents....10cent anti/ blind (we only put in one blind)...All of us are fairly new to the game also, so were starting small until we understand the angles of this game and not just throw our money away.

I would recommend doing $25 and $100 chips and starting your blinds at 25/50. Then if you want, you can use a third color as $500 chips and get rid of the $25 chips when you don't need them anymore.

The First time me and my buddies played a home game was the first time that any of us had even played hold'em!

We kept it simple by using 3 colours and kept the values at 5, 25 and 100. Everyone had as many chips as possible. The idea behind that was that everyone can play a decent number of hands before getting knocked out and can experiment with raising and bluffing a little too. This makes things more fun with friends!

We doubled the blinds every time the dealer came back round to the person who started dealing that round (or the person to the right if the dealer had been knocked out), and started off with blinds of 1,2.

I hope this helps!
