Dear Ryan:

I'll give you my opinion, FWIW. I don't like those little chip trays. I think they limit the flexibility of your table. I play in a regular game where we use an octagon top with chip trays. I wish they didn't exist. I find it easier to stack my chips. The drink holder in the middle is a lousy place to put drinks -- too easy to knock over on either the floor or the table. Get coke all over poker chips and you have a real mess. It's not good for cards either. Even KEMs would have to be wahsed. But what I've learned is, if you have a drink holder at the table, someone will use it. Unless it's one that the glass sinks down really low in, you are merely waiting until disaster strikes.

I'd consider leaving the table flat. You wouldn't have to route it out, and it would be easier to work with.

I know those tables look nice, but having used one many times, I just wish the chip trays and drink holders didn't exist.

Now, that's just my opinion. Others love those things. While I dislike them, it doesn't keep me from playing, and I wouldn't ever tell the host something like that if I thought he'd feel slighted or insulted. He's very proud of his table.

Hope this helps.

The racks aren't my cup o' tea, but you will find the bits here: http://www.aptoolparts.com/html/bits_by_profile.html and scroll down to Rounded Bits, Core Box is what is used, I think. Exactly which one, I don't know.

Good luck...

I agree with Tex Rex on the drink issue. I made some little drink tables. I'm no woodworker, so I'm sure somebody with experience could make good ones, but they suffice.

Here's the plan (from memory, please bear with me):

Get a 4x4 sheet of whatever, cut it into 2 2x4 sheets. From this, you should be able to get six triangular pieces, each of which is 2 feet on a side. (Maybe I started with a 4x8 sheet?).

Anyway, round off the corners nicely, drill three holes in three of pieces to drop drink holders into (near, but not too near the vertices). These are the top surfaces.

I routed indentations into the internal surfaces of each of the six pieces of the tables and used dowels to connect them. So, now, you've got three tables, each of which is made of two triangular pieces connected by three dowels, one near each vertex.

A little experimentation is in order. I found finishing nails and carpenter's glue worked o.k., screws would probably be stronger to hold the table surface to the dowels.

Stain them, put wheels on the bottom, voila!

I find the triangular shape is nice to roll up between the players at a table. With what I went with, you have three cup holders on each table, and some space in the middle for snacks.

Gets all that clutter out from in front of you on the poker table.

Your tables sound cool. Could you post a pic. I'd love to see the finished product before I start one.

I agree with Tex Rex on the drink coasters -- I have an octagon table with coasters and trays. The trays aren't really chip trays, but more of a place for everyone to put stuff (usually chips). There have been a few times when beer gets knocked over from the coasters and land right in the trays, soaking all the chips. Half the time someone will knock their beer/soda into the other persons tray. Unless the coasters will handle a normal size beer bottle or drink and have it sink into the table so it can't get knocked over, avoid the drink coasters. I've even seen people with the sunken coasters -- if they have coffee or something with a large opening on top, a chip will eventually bounce into their drink.

Luckily I currently own monogrammed diamond chips which are easy to clean. Getting chipcos soon though.
