so I was in Vegas last week and stayed at the Mirage... my first trip to a brick & mortar poker room..
I'm not fabulously wealthy so I played 3/6 limit and this was a "family" vacation so I couldn't spend too much time there.
Anyway... my first night was a disaster...never thought there would be *that* much chasing, but the catching made it worse..
The second time I sat down I watched a little more closely and the table (as expected) was playing a little loose... I'm first to act pre-flop and get A4 suited... I call. It goes all the way around and the BB checks.
I get two more suits on the flop with nothing extra-ordinary; I make a bet at it and everyone folds but the BB who simply calls. The turn brings my flush. I bet; he just calls...same action on last round. He gets super pissed when he loses (he drew a straight).
So back to the subject... who's the bigger idiot: the one betting into a hand and drawing it? or the one who simply keeps calling the bets and loses?
I actually think he was just bad tempered in general and had some really bad cards that day as he just kept on mumbling under his breath the rest of the session and kept getting outdrawn or would catch nothing on the flop...

My take:
When you are betting on a draw you are in effect, semi-bluffing. One of the first rules of semi-bluffing is that you don't do it if you know you'll get called. I would imagine that at this 3-6 table, a call was almost guaranteed. But maybe not.
But drawing to hands that may not be any good even if you do hit (in this case his straight) can get you into trouble. However, by betting in early position you probably disguised your hand to your opponent. Not surprising he didn't put you on a flush draw.
Also, IMO A4 suited is not a good UTG hand (but I'm a fairly tight player). I prefer to to play that hand vs. a lot of limpers and no raise preflop (and maybe this table had very few preflop raises but I still would like to have more info to that effect before I put any money in). You'll only hit your flush 5% of the time (and that includes runner-runner, which you often won't hang around to see).
Hope you had a great time. There's only one Vegas!

I will play A4 suited everytime....AND I will bet w/ it if I flop 4 to the flush with more than 3 in the pot. If I hit the flush in early position on the turn or river, I will check, hoping another dope was chasing just like me, then pound him when I have the nutz.
If I miss, I am out on the flop.
I dont know if I win or lose money in general w/ Ax suited, but it I believe that it definately gets me more calls w/ AK AQ. Also, nothing better than a flop of K44 beating an AK w/ trips 4s or winning a monster pot against a blind of 47 and AK.
So the answer-he was a bigger idiot, but convince him that you got lucky. At the Mirage a few weeks ago I won a $500 pot @ 10/20 w/ 89 suited calling 2 bets cold then another 2 bets on the turn w/ 2nd pair and 4 to the flush against AK and 25 when one had top pair and the other the wheel (already a big pot preflop, called a raise in the blind w/ 6 others). Even though the 25 had the nuts on the turn, he was the bigger idiot for playing that in the 1st place then being pissed when I rivered him. Made $1k that night, almost $400 on that hand.

Thanks all, I got what I was looking for... a variety of answers.
I am normally a "tighter than most" player, but after I saw how loose every one else was playing I had to try this hand. I had already decided that any raise pre-flop and I was getting out; it just so happened that this one worked out for me.
and yes, I had a great time ... I neither lost nor posted a gain while at the poker tables... it was all the other crap in Vegas that took the bank roll...

no prob playing Ax sootid in EP. your limp should encourage others to limp, giving you the pot odds you need to play that hand. And you are the type of player to NOT get involved in an A82 rainbow flop. nice job.
