I have always played without an ante, but with a big and small blind. Is this a typical setup?

Early in a tournament, it's typical to start with just two blinds. As the tourney progresses, sometimes antes are introduced in later rounds. For a small home game tourney with 6-10 people, I don't see the need for antes. You'll get enough action with just the blinds.

I personally don't like the antes in a game with less than 25 people in it. They're not really needed unless you have a large group in my opinion.
