unethical, probably... but was it illegal

Posted Sat Oct 23, 2004 8:04 pm GMT by soccerboy9
this came up yesterday during our weekly tourny. i am in early postion with king queen suited and raise a couple hundered. everyone folds around to the small blind who has been going all in the past 4 or so hands because he was on the short stack. i think real hard about the decision then i get a bright idea, im gonna show him my cards without saying call or fold in order to get a reaction to how strong his cards would be vs my cards. well then thinking that i folded he showed me his cards which were also king queen but unsuited, so i decided i would call him because i would be a slight favorite because mine were suited. we ended up splitting the pot in the end though. so i can imagine that this type of play is very unethical but is it really illegal because i didnt state call or fold.

thanks

you're gonna get different answers on this one. my take is that while technically legal (i think so, anyway), it's a bullshit move.

There is no set rule on this (that i know of) it is usually a house rule. Some places will rule it a dead hand some will allow you to play it.

In super system doyle mentions a play when there are trips on the board and he flipped over pocket aces before making a call.

I think the other guy had pocket kings or something.

Illegal:
I don't know of any rule that says this is illegal. Then again, every place can make their own rules. However, if you flipped your hand up and your cards "move forward" then it would be considered dead in most places. Almost every place has a rule about if you "toss your cards in a forward motion then they are considered dead". However, the definition of "moves forward", "throws forward" or "forward motion" is really up to dealer and ultimately poker room boss interpretation. Also if your cards are not protected and action is to you, a dealer can rightfully muck your cards thinking you folded. Since this happened at home I assume you don't pay anyone to deal permanently. In a casino be careful, a dealer may snag your cards and if they become mucked, no matter what, they are mucked and dead. Unless overruled by the poker room boss.

Ethical:
Personally, I don't care. Because I'm one of those guys that next time it is you and I heads up I'll get ya back some how. By doing what you did usually means you are weak or inexperienced player. I say usually because you hear of the odd story where a "professional" does this on purpose. On accident is a whole other thing. On purpose it may happen once in their entire lifetimw. There are usually many other things to base your decision to call him off of. In your case, if he was small blind and everyone folded when you were early action that makes your hand look pretty good. Knowing he was short stacked and assuming he would go all-in because he was, would be a safe assumption and AQs going against a short stacked SB all-in is a hand I would think most would play. No need to flip your hand up. In that situation call him.

I dunno, but you'd never hear me complain if my opponent wants to show me his cards.
