Hi all.
I hope i'm in the right place for advice.
Just to let you know a bit about myself. I have been playing online poker now for about 3 years. I started with Paradise Poker and now I play at Paradise and Party.
I am a little frustrated with myself because when I started I used to win quite consistently and now everytime I deposit $20 I lose it quite quickly.
I believe I am an average / OK player. I dont play loosely, I play quite tightly but maybe not tight enough. I also believe I am having a problem with money management.
Ive been playing recently signle table tournaments NL and have been doing OK. But I seem to lose my bankroll even if I win at these tournaments probably because I doint win consistently.
Should I only play tring games instead of tourneys in order to build my bankroll?
I would like to ask the guys here that make consistent cash playing online poker these few questions:
- Can you make money only playing the top tier starting hands ie AA KK AK QQ JJ (the reason I ask this is because I believe that I should discipline myself bigtime and not mess around with hands like AJo or KJ and stuff like that. I dont care if I dont play as many hands as I used to but as long as I win a little more consistently that is the goal here).
- I find myself chasing quite a bit. Not sets but straights or flushes. In a low limit game if I am on a flush draw I will chase it to the end usually. Pretty much same thing with straight draws. Should I fold after TURN if I dont make it? Usually if theres a pair on board I would not chase those.
- Let's say I deposit $200 and at the end of the day I'm up $50, should I withdraw the $50? Or build on it?
I'm a little at a loss here. I need advice on money management and typical starting hand play.
Can I be a consistent winner at online poker playing just the 5 starting hands above or looser?
Any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks,
David

it is important to make sure you have the right pot odds to chase. if you are in a very small pot with a nut flush draw, its probably not worth your while to look for the flush. but if your bet is equal to about 20% of the pot, that is where it starts to make sense in the long run to try to hit that flush. also, iam only talking about limit here. i am definately the wrong person to give advice on NL.

Any time i start to go into a slump, i do the opposite of what most players do, and i loosen up. I definately play KJ Q10 J10, small/medium pairs, and sometimes evenplay the smaller suited and/or connecting cards. I play most of my hands when I'm almost positive i can limp or come in very cheap, and then i hope for the best on the flop. You win alot more money with trip threes and two pair 8's and 9's (and feel alot more confident in your hand) than you would when your only playing premium starting hands.
I've found out that you will get back on track alot quicker with this loose stratigy of play then sitting back and waiting for Aces Kings Queens AK, which are by no means a lock to win the hand anyway. When you invest the money you saved all night on one pocket pair of Kings(that you wouldnt want to throw away even with a pair or an ace on board because of the time you've wasted looking for them) you'll feel pretty bad when you lose to aces.
It will cost you're bankroll more with the lose style of play, but the rewards will be much greater then just sitting back.
Although its true that you can't lose what you don't throw on the table,... you can't win much either. And winning big pots is what this game is all about.
-I hope this helps
And stop grindin' it out.
Dan
