Poker Tables -- Round or Oval? |

I've noticed that most of the tables that are coming out are oval like in card rooms. Isn't this only a good idea if you have a dealer? I played on an oval table this weekend and dealing from the ends is a pain!

The oval tables are much better for holdem, just put players who regularly deal towards the middle, thats what we usually do. You can fit a lot more players comfortably at the oval tables then at the round ones also.

I have a round table that I built. It seats 8 comfortably - 9 if we squeeze. It's not bad for dealers choice, but I don't care for hold'em on it too much - my advice - go w/ oval.

Dealing from the ends on an oval table is tough, but I would rather have an oval than a round table any day.

If in fact you have less than 8 players and no dealer I think it is much easier on a normal round poker table. If you play with more people than that an oval comes into it's own. Throwing cards from one end of an oval to the other doesn't work. Passing the cards down to the other end is ......
If you have a few players who aren't the swuftest at shuffling and dealing you can put them at the ends since someone else usually has to deal for them anyway.
My $.02 having played on both.

yeah, we play dealers choice, everyone deals. I do hear what you are all saying about being able to fit more on the oval. I'll just try not to sit on the end!

I def prefer round or octagon over oval. Most of my games consist of less then 6 people anyways.
You could always buy both!

Hay Wulf...
Remember me? Just caught your post. I really like my oval talbes in my poker room, they make it so I can place alot of people all ove the room and help keep it all contained rather well. how ever there are times I crave the Round/octed tables...
I think it a matter of Space VS. Player I have a bit more space to manage then just a Garage or dinning room, thus I can fit bigger talbes and more of them then most people can. And I have alot of Clients who use this space to their own amusment.
How ever if I had space like a living room and a dinning room and maybe even the bath room, I would opt for the round tables in a heart beat. place two here two there and you got room for 24-32 players in your house. things may get a bit cramped.
If your space is a 1 or 2 car garage I would go with an oval style table, I'de say two maybe even three tables would fit pretty well in that space.
If your space is a 3 car garage thats been extended like 150 times it orignal size. you could house 6-8 talbes rather easiely.
Then again I could be totaly UP in the Night on this one and not have a clue of what I'm talking about. I'm speacking more as a guy who sees his own table creations Both in Octagonal and Oval and thust knows rougly how they fit and the space needed around and between them to work well in tight spaces.
Speacking of Space bro, if you ever Want those chips and T-shirt, your gonna have to come to Utah and play one of our tourneys... My bros and I have agreed that they must stay player/members only gear. your a member By Invite only so I'm offering you an Invite if your ever in the Slat Lake Area. I have an open Space reserved just for Special Guest players. You'd be on my table and in good company, we're all just a mellow bunch of peopl just looking to have fun and play poker.

I hear ya. Yeah, it would be nice to have one of both. Round would be better if everyone can fit, but you just can't beat the oval if you have a lot of players. I played in a game Friday and the guy usually hosts tourneys, even has a 10 week tourney setup. Small tourney every week, you have to play 5 weeks to qualify for the final round + you have to win a few. His table is home made, oval, seats 10 easily. I'm sure more could squeeze in. He has a octagon as a spare table too.
Regarding the t-shirt and chips, I would like to go out there sometime! What's the usual buy-in for a night?

Yeah all my tables are Home Made too but I put alot of work into them with Wood race tracks and one pease rails. These tables are heavy how ever since I used about 3 sheets of lumber plus all the hardware added. I built pedistals for them instead of fold table style I actualy still have my first tables both the Round one and the first oval I've ever built. Each of my talbes now take three of my buddies to move anywhere and when the are set down, they sit like a rock. a really good looking rock. In fact I've sold a few of these tables as I've been constanly upgrading.
I'f I filled this room with Round tables I could get an extra ten-twenty players in but it would also not look quite as nice. For a rough idea of what my tables look like click here to see step by step how it is done. This is almost the same exact designe I used with a few modifacations of my own.

We pay the first, second and third place in the standard 50/30/20 reward structure. We also have a cover charge for food and drinks of $5.00 a head.
Blinds start as low as 25-50 and move up from there. We play till the last man/woman standing. This Takes roughly 8 hours to arrive at.
On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday we have a cash game the minimun Buy-in is $50.00 and the max is $200.00 in a range of games. Stud, Hold'em, and even Draw poker. We'll play those till 12:00am or 2:00am depending on they players.
We do not award cash on these games till all the chips are accounted for.
One thing I forgot to mention the way you'll get that T-shirt is you'll be dealing that night, and thus we'll have to give you a staff shirt.
We play our Tourneys Monday, Wensdays, and Friday Nights from 6pm - 12am. We play our cash games Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays from 6pm - 12 or 2am (Depending on the players still actively playing)
We're very proud of our club and are very happy to see new friends come and check us out so long as they where invited.

Smoke you Cigar(ettes) all you want but if it's green or mind Altering, don't bother.

You had me sold till I saw that part I understand the need for it tho -believe me! I couldn't imagine what it'd be like to have a house full of 50 drunk poker players. Problem for me is that i like to have a shot each time I bust someone out. Helps to keep my head on straight.

Kid Krow: do you have a pic of the pedestal legs you've made? I haven't found a leg style I like yet. I'm currently using pedestal's from a restraunt supply store. It's the best option I've seen, but I'm always looking for new options.

The peace that left over from the Table rails. that center incert thats too small to use as a backing for under the table, and too big for a lid for the table I Decided to make use of it as the base of the pedestal.
I then built two big Vs about 27 inches high and then placed them at eigther side of the table these Vs are made out of 2x4, with supports to ad stability and strength.
At the point of the V's I centered another 2x4, four inchs shorter (23") to make a 2 inch slot, on both side, to house the stretcher beams.
(note: you'll have to cut the point off so that looks like a 2x4 picket so that this will attach in hind sight a 4x4 would have done well and saved on waisted 2x4. use a midersaw to creat these pickets. its the easiest way I know.)
I then attache two streatches of 2x4s on top and on bottom. to connect the Two Vs and then place a series of supporting 2x4s about a foot at a time. I screwed the 2x4 that contact both the base board under the table top and to the Base of the pedestal right between these support beams.
then I skinned it with panels of Cherryt finishing Plywood that I had cut just for the pedestal.
(Note: I had tipped my rip saw blade 45 degrees and ran each connecting Edge trough except the middle two long panels which I left straight. this gave it a fit so that not one bit of the ply showed nore the 2x4s that made the skelital insides." Each pease was pretty much custom made for right where I put them so as to make the best fit possable which was tight as hell. I then Knocked off the sharp corners with a bit of sanding to take the bite out of them a bit but not too much to exspose the Plywood nature of my lumber.)
I then ran some molding both on top and on bottom. to hide the creases and screws as best I could and to just plain just look good. this helped Give the Pedestal Character. With my roughter I ran around the edge of the Pedestal Base board to knock off it sharp edges an then I go the idea to place little squares of felt under the Base to protect the floors brom any sort of scratching. this also used up most of the excess table felt cut away and left for waist.
after a good sanding and a sealer treatment it looked really very good. But if I was forced to guess, I say the Thing weights in at 500-600 lbs. easy at the very least. and once you place it, try as you might the damn thing don't wiggle more then a fraction of a hair width. it all one part not though and the table top comes off to the race track leving the Padded Center and Table top basboard behind. it doesn't become all that much lighter however.
I've used theis pedestal now on all 6 tables and it looks great and get quite a reaction. it looks better to have a pedestal then fold table legs any day. it leave the impression that this room is planning to not go anywhere anytime soon.
anyways I hope that helps you get the idea of how to build a pretty basic Pedestal. at least it was basic for me.
Later Y'all,
~Kid Krow Out
