I have been trying many different strategies as I start to play hold'em again, but I keep ending just outside the money. :/
As far as I can tell, this happens because the only real way to win intelligently at those is to play tight and hope for a better than average run of cards. If you don't, you end up shortstacked and end up losing to a lucky freeroller who calls your last all in with K2 (because it was suited and we all know every suited pair is gold since flushes are just as common as pairs). They basically remove bluffing from the game, and while it's not the most important part of poker, it is important enough.
I don't know why I continue to plug away. I suppose it's because I feel I need to find a way to beat these drones consistently out of sheer pride. I can't admit defeat to people who call my 4xBB preflop raise with 7j, and then my flop all-in on a flush draw.
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? Be it by sharing experiences or simply asking for help, participation in a forum helps you focus and keep 'on topic' which will help you improve your game. You can learn from other players feedback and from their experiences. Why the THP poker forums? We offer one of the best managed texas holdem poker forums available, and the community within is far more friendly than those typicaly found on other sites. We've made a 'lurkers edition' of the poker forum available here on Holdem Poker Online, but we encourage all visitors to register and join in on the conversations on TexasHoldem-Poker.com

In the long run you will profit if you play "correctly"
My first ever tourney win (or was it my second?) was a freeroll.
As you say, you should play tight, at the beginning anyway, after about half the field is gone so are most of the lunatics who just don't care cos it's a freeroll, so you can open up a little. This is when things like raises preflop and bluffs, if executed well, will start to have an effect.
I'm not saying this will always work, the other day i made it down to last 60 of 800 or so and still got caught out by a no foldem calling my bluff (there were 2 pair, J's and T's on the board and it was checked round to me on the river, i had QK and had been leading the betting on a draw which never came, so i move all in and this guy calls me with.............. yep you guessed it! A4os )
But in the long run, and it is a long long run, you will get there

In a freeroll, It is about making a good hand and acquiring chips, not bluffing. Early on, there is not a chance that will work. I will occasionally play in one of the UB freerolls for fun, and I can usually work my way into the top 300 without much fancy manuvering. Just good solid poker. If you catch some great cards...... look out.

Ya I'm about the same Nick so I don't feel too bad then. I usually make top 250 with many top 100s. I've only made the money maybe 2x though. I play in the ones for UB points since you can actually turn those into cash. I figure the TEC plays are too much of a long shot since you have to place high in two freerolls to get one.

Yeah, I've figured out that they are a waste of time and effort. Save your money to play at decent stakes. Freerolls are terrible compared to other opportunities for having a real chance at making money.

I finshed 13th in a recent Hollywood poker one. Got $5 for my efforts. The nutcases go out early and if your lucky enough to take one out you get all their chips.
I see freerolls as a great way to get some practice in a huge tourney enviornment.
I read somewhere that they are expecting over 5,000 players for the $25,000 buyin championship.
$25,000 is a lot of money but I'm sure there will be more then a few nut jobs there. You have to get used to playing with these type of players, they play at every level.

Yeah, I have found the key is to wait for the cards and use one of the all in happy guys to double you up early. Its freeroll and people love to call an all in.

Save your money until you can afford to play a real game of poker.

I dont think there is a method. I got 2nd in a party poker one. 2400 people. Made a whooping $50. Lets just say i started out by pushing the first hand with 57 suited. Cause its my friends favorite hand. Then from there i just steamrolled everything. And got lucky a few times. Like pushing with 77 on a flop with Q56 And the guy laughs as he calls with QQ. And you make a runner runner stright. But hey a little luck and a few good moves you might have a chance,
