Non-Tournament Poker Night

Posted Mon Nov 01, 2004 4:58 am GMT by Ry Guy
I've been thinking it over and have decided to hold my own poker night for my friends and I. but now I'm stumped, How many chips do I need in what colors and how many colors?

I'm pretty sure on a few things however.

    It's gonna be Hold'em.
    It's not a Tounament.
It's not gonna be No limit (Pot limit maybe).
there is room for ten of us.
min. buy-in is 50 bucks and a max of 100.
I want to play from 8pm till about 12 or 2am.

What Betting Structures should I use? fixed limit? Spread Limit? Pot limit? with a buy-in of 50-100 bucks what should my denominations be? how many chips should I give out to each player when they buy in? What kind of beer is the standard favorite? (I'm a bud lite man my self)

I'm really really stumped on this one. but I'm kinda tired of every one and their No limit Hold'em Tournaments all the time. I just want to sit down, drink some beers and play poker with my friends and not worry about my tournament ranking and chips stacks vs. even one elses.

any help rendered would be nice. Thanks in advance.

Ry,

First of all let me tell you right up front good luck to you and you poker Night. being a manager of my own Poker Social Club has taught me that there really is no standard way to do things. It can be both a blessing and a course trying to keep track of things like just how much beer/soda/food to buy for ten+ people and what not.

Next let me ask you one thing? What kind of chips are you gonna buy, just how trustworthy are your friends and the like? you may be able to get away with the cheep thin poker chips you buy in the store but then again would you really want to?

Lastly, you're gonna have to pick a betting structure, fixed, spread or pot limit, must be decided right off the bat or any information we can give you is almost no existance.

Personaly I run 6 diffrent structure/limits on my cash game nights, but this is only because I have 6 tables to run these game off of. I found that I had to Pick them and then commit to that before going any further.

As far as chips and their Denom/ammount, I'm very much a "You can never have too many" sort of guy and thus would be the wrong person to tell you this infomantion.

However here what I have found in the last few months of running my game nights. about 30% of my clients like the pot limit games followed by 25% prefurring the Spread limit. Next I have found that 35% will play the No limit game, but you really didn't want to hear that now did you. 10% like my Fixed limit games which is also where I tend to sit/deal om my tables.

These figure are from my own Games and does not by any means show the overall preffrence of any other poker room/groups/player. this how ever should give you an idea. you want my opionion on this one? excluding the No limit, Pot and Spread limit are gonna be your top two choises. If I personaly had to commit to just one game, I'de choose Spread limit.

This gives the players more choise in what they are willing to bet for their hand so long as it stays with in the Limit range. like for instance a $1-$5 game a palyer can bet/raise from $1 to five at a time through out the entire couse of the hand. but it also keeps the betting action pretty reasonable.

Thats just my opionion though and I could be up in the night on this one. Hopefully some one elce wit have more/better infomation for ya.

Again Best of Luck to ya,

Oh and I almost for got.

Beer is Beer is Beer. Wanna Hint? Get two kinds anf get a case of each. that way they have a choise. also tell your buddies that it fine to bring their own brand so long as the bring atleast 12 and are willing to share the wealth.

When I say Case I mean a case. if you don't know what a case is I'll tell you. it 24 beers, IE one for each hour of the day...

LOL on the Beer bit.
So a Spread limit is pretty good?
What should the limit be for that kind of a game?
You have a Poker room?
I though they didn't allow gambling in Utah?

5. In some situations it's not illegal here in Utah. Wink

Ry,

I'm about to head to bed, but was thinking about something, what Kind of table are you gonna be using? Round/octagonal or Oval?

I bring this up for two reason. One what kind of dealer setup are you gonna have and two Space Vs. Player Relations.

I'll go into more detail here. Round/octagonal tables pretty much seat 6-8 players. every play is the exact same distance from the person directly across from no matter what seat theu sit at the table. You arn't ganna seat 10 big guys at a table like this confortably.

Elbow room is the key word here. how ever it makes for a good game that allows for every player to deal the cards with out having to worry about pitching them clear across the table. Minimal Dealer shills needed for this kind of set up.

Oval Tables are great because they seat a bigger range of people 8-14 confortably and look and feel more like what you see in Casino and TV. how ever these tables have one big draw back. a dealer on the end has a hell of a time doing their job.

Oval tables also require to have a stationary/desinated dealer seat in the middle of one of the two long side of the table. this also requires that this dealer have a bit more skill at dealing and pitching these cards. instead of passing the deck(s) around a button with the word dealer is passed (i'm sure we all knew that but humor me) to signafy who is the last to be dealt cards and act.

My poker Room has 6 tables. all 6 of these tables has a Desinated Dealer. we have 6 buttons and six decks are used at any given moment. each one of us had to learn how to deal like a Casino Pro. unfortunely there isn't reall a resource for learning to shuffle and pitch cards like a Vagas pro on the web. so we found our selves a real casino dealer and beat him senceless till he showed us how to do it and do it right.

If you don't believe me on this, try pitching cards across any serface thats 6-8 feet long keeping the card from being exsposed. I'll tell you from experience it's not an easy task. and it took me weeks to get it down so that I could. each one of us practiced till he could pitch and entire deck of cards across our 7 foot tables without exsposing any cards before we concited our selves ready.

If your planning on using a round/octagonal table you may want to eighter scale you exspected guest number back a couple or add another table and add a few more player to the list.

If your planning on using a Oval/long table you may want to conciter making your self the dealer and get some sort of button. then learning how to correctly shuffle card and to pitch then to all 8-9 spots on the table.

from the other post I've read from here, you seem like you need a bit of pratice in a few areas. a Dealer needs to be able to know how split pots work. how to calculate and keep a running total of the pot value. how to identify the winning hand at a glance. it may sound easy but I assure you it is not, how ever these skills are very much worth learning.

I hope I haven't discouraged you from your plans, it's certinalty not my intent to make you seconded guess your self. I'm simply giving you a feel for just how much more it take then to just buy some beer, and call a bunch of you buddies over for a game of poker.

Anyways. Hope that give you some idea about what you need to do. and I hope that there will be a resource for Dealing cards on the web soon. Hell I would even go so far as to say I would do an artical/howto on this site if i had the time and the resources to do something like that. Hell I just may bring it up to the admin. for this site.

Take it easy,
~Kid Krow Out
