cant for the life of me come up with a decent chip structure

Posted Thu Nov 04, 2004 10:54 am GMT by Rayburn
First of all, gotta say, I love this forum, more or less, hard earned Canadian tax dollars pay for me to browse this forum.

Alright, back to chip structure.

I have 1000 chips.
white, blue, red, green, black

For someone that has regular succesful homegames, what kind of chip values and how many chip should I be using.
We change things around every once in a while to see if the game is any more enjoyable, and me and my buds are yet to come up with a comfortable chip structure.

Any thoughts?

The one I like that we use is to start everyone with 1500 in chips. Use denominations of 25 and 100 with 500's if you need to. The blinds start at 25/50 and go up every half hour

25/50
50/100
75/150
100/200

The guys have decided to change the structure slightly to see if the games are better or not with an ante. The new structure is this.

25/50
50/100
75/150
100/200
100/200/25
150/300/50
200/400/75
300/600/100
400/800/125
500/1000/150

For my home games, we use $200 in chips per player ($1 whites, $5 reds, $25 blues -- we use blues instead of greens because that's what the guy with the chips has).

Blinds go up every 20 minutes:
1/2
2/4
3/6
remove whites
5/10
10/20
15/30
remove reds
25/50
50/100
75/150
100/200
150/300
200/400

With five or six guys, the game should last about 3 hours.

what we are presently using is...try not to laugh..

red=$2
blue=$5
green=$10
black=$20

15 red=$30
10 blue=$50
5 green=$50
5 black=$100
---------------
=$230

now does $230 sound like an odd number to start with?

I have white chips as well that are not being used....it would be nice if I could incorporate them in the game some way, i know they may be more useful in a multi table tourney rather than a single table tourney.

wow, blinds go up every 20 minutes!
I like this concept...we have been playing
starting blings
2/4
go up 2x every time someone goes out
4/8
8/16
etc.

I find when playing with a bunch of checkers that games take forever,
last night we had a 7 player game that lasted 2.5 hours...ouch!
I love the raising blind idea every 20 minutes.

now...the question is how do I get my buddies to go along with this...we play for cash..some nights we play for a reasonable amount of money, so i dont want to introduce a new structure and get bitched at when people lose their money.

If you explain the blind raising by time instead of times people get knocked out they should realize it's a much better idea. Point out to them that most tourneys go a while before anyone gets knocked out, in most cases, and when it gets late into a game, usually because the blinds are high, people get knocked out more frequently so you don't have equal amount of time in each blind level. I played in a friends game the other night and when I was getting all the rules at the start I noticed he raised the blinds as people got knocked out. I explained to him about raising them by time so he gave it a shot. After that game he said he was never going back to the old way.

really!...huh
well I have a big game tonight so i will try every 20 minutes for sure.
I think were trying to get 3 games in so try that out on the first, hopefully it will stick.

Ok, another question...we usually play $10 buy in, sometimes $20..
At your home games, do you have a first AND second prize

we play winner takes all.

Depends on the number of people. We almost always play that second gets at least their money back and sometimes we have a third prize if there are like 9 or more people.

I pay as follows:

5 people or less = winner takes all

6-8 = 2nd gets their buy-in back and winner takes rest

9 and up = 3rd gets buy-in back, 2nd a little bit more, and winner gets the bulk

I really like this idea as well, in most games we have I think 2nd place deserves buy in back.

I am the one with the chips, so it is pretty much up to me when we play.
So I guess i can be the one who sets the structure anyways.
We have played so many different ways in the past 3 months that it would seem kinda awkward to set a standard structure now.

Most of the guys I play with dont even have internet hookup so pointing them to this post is almost worthless.

The problem is getting them to play the "right" way, when i tell them what i read online they look at me as if I am trying to take them for a ride...I want to improve my play, and if there is a "better" way of doing things I want to do it.

I guess I have to set standard rules and play only to those standard rules.
Tell me if i am wrong, but would changing amount of chips, who gets a prize and different blind structure change the dynamics of the game, not drastically but still?

I would come up with a way to do it, print it out and have everyone read it and understand it. Then its up to you whether you want to set it in stone or take a vote on it.

What I do is take some chips and divide them by the amount of players. I'll take like 20 white per player, 10 red, 5 blue. White = 5 red = 10 blue = 20 Later on I introduce the the greens as 50 and the blacks as 100.
