Battle of the 9g composite chips?? |
|
Posted Wed Nov 10, 2004 1:05 am GMT by Guest
ok i have a serious question. please can someone tell me the difference between these chips.....
and these chips...
to me, these are the exact same chips with the same material. the HUGE differnce is that the 2nd ones sell for 80cents a chip whereas the first ones you can buy a set of 500 on ebay for only $90.
Huge differnce for practically the same exact chip? are sites like gamblers general store and we do it all vegas just gouging us?
the 2nd of the chips is featured during the WSOP ESPN shows. they are used on the interview table segment of the show.
WHY IS THERE A HUGE DISCREPANCY IN PRICE??? 80cents versus ~20cents!?!?!
I say this because my goal is to make a 500 chip set used for tournaments. i would like to try and have different edge spots for each denomination.
So the Red $5 i would like to have the one used in the 2nd pic with .
Green $25 i would want the 1st kind with yellow edges.
Black 100 i would go with the 1st kind again with white edges like this
Purple 500 i would use this design.
and then on top of this i would need to make a custom insert for all of them. My intention is to mimic the one used in the WSOP.
WORLD SERIES OF POKER
No Cash Value
500
HORSESHOE
BUT.... does anyone know if they will make custom inserts on these chips? or what kind of material is used? because i have played with these before and they seen like a plastic insert that would be impossible to replicate cheaply.
in actuality, i would rather buy custom bud jones chips. but we all know that is impossible. from what ive gathered from this forum, these 9g composite chips are the next closest thing.
also, has anyone actually tried to get a custom set from RT PLASTICS? The edgespots on their site are amazing. but how much are they? would anyone else be willing to do a group buy on the RT plastics since i assume they only deal with bulk orders.
THANKS FOR YOUR PATIENCE IN READING ALL OF THIS. as you can see, i am very adamant about my chips. i have fallen in love with the WSOP chips and i wont settle for anything less! :D

i have some samples of those top ones (thanks to the member here who hooked me up with those samples) and i was not at all impressed.
i could just be picky though... so before you buy ANYTHING make sure you get samples so you know what you're getting. pictures can be very deceaving.

The cheaper ones are low quality, probably metal center. The .80 cent ones are made by RT Plastics, very good casino quality. I have not seen the cheaper ones, who knows, might be decent. I do have samples of the .80 RT Plastic chips and they are worth the .80 cents in my opinion. If you like the .80 chips, you can even get customs made by RT which would add a $150 art fee. If you do go with custom RT's, the only edge pattern available is the one shown in your pics above. I would have gone with them for customs if they would give me the Tuscany pattern. They wouldn't, so I ended up going in on the suits group buy. I kept a Tuscany chip from Chumash shown here:
http://www.chipguide.com/cgi-bin/search/search.cgi?id=casycc
I like that pattern, but no luck. I keep saying this -- CALL AND BUG THEM. Tell them what pattern you want. I couldn't break them.
You probably do not want to mix the two sets. Their both going to be different sounding and weight. You will probably also find that the RT chips stack better.
Get samples of both, I'm sure you will agree that the .80 chips are much nicer. You may not agree that they are worth .80 though!
Happy hunting, let us know what you go with.

From what I've understand and I may be wrong, but these two style chips are each manufactured by RT plastics. The 1st style though is a mass produced lower quality chip made for pokerchipmart.com aimed at the recreational player. Pokerchipmart is also supposed to be offering custom inlays one of these years.
I have 1100 of the cheaper chip and they're fine for me. There is no metal core and they sound and feel fine. They're not the greatest quality but when they're free you can't complain much. There are a few affiliate programs out there now giving the 1st style 500 chip set away for free for as little as a $100 deposit and a certain amount of play at selected sites. I won't post them here as not to spam. I used one of these and got an extra set of 500 for free with no shipping.
I like them alot more than my old 11.5 dice set. They make a decent sound and are also a little easier to shuffle. I also like the edge spots alot more. They stack fine on a hard surface. On my padded table going over 30 chips high can be tempting fate though.
There's a few things to complain about them though.
1. On the $1 white chips the black edge spots seem to bleed alittle not not be as crisp as the edge spots on the other denominations. Alot of people on this forum would complain BIG TIME about this. Personally I'm not going to complain for about $.09 a chip.
2. One shrink wrapped stack of 50 was short a chip. I called the vendor and they sent me a replacement chip ASAP with no questions asked.
3. One $100 chip only had a lable on oneside. I called the vendo again and they sent me a replacement chip with no questions asked.
4. One chip from my 1100 is about 1mm larger than all the rest.
5. One sticker on one chip is slighty off. one of these days I'll get round to requesting another replacement. They seem to be very good about this.
6. If I had my way, the inlay would have a matte finish rather than a gloss finish.
I haven't seen the more expenive chips you have here, but they just look like basically the same thing with better quality control and more choices on the inlay.

I really doubt RT makes the cheaper ones. Any evidence to back this up? I don't have the .09 ones, but I'm pretty sure they're nowhere near the quality of the .80 RT chips.

The first 9 gram chips DO NOT have a metal insert. They actually sound like clay chips when stacked and shuffled. They are actually less slick than the TR Plastics.
The TR Plastics are extremely slippery and do not stack well. They are also extremely expensive. But like the advice given previoulsy, GET SAMPLES!

As I said, the idea that RT plastics makes the 9 gram chips is just what something I was told by another player. I qualified it with the fact it may not be correct information. I just e-mailed pokerchipmart.com though with the question hoping for a definative answer. I'll see what they say.
To clarify the chips are not 9 cents each, mine just worked out that way since I bought one set and got another set for free. Normally I think they're clser to 20 cents a chip.
As for if they are as good as an the 80 cent chip, that all depends. I am of the mind that the cheaper chips are not 4 - 8 times worse than the 80 cent RT chip. I saved about 74% with the cheaper chip, not even including the free set.
If I had to worry about security much, I'd probably go for a fancier custom set. If I was rich I might do that as well, just for esthetics and my ego. I dont' really spend time playing cards concentrating on the chips though. I concentrate more on the other players and the cards.
If I get a reply regarding the actual manufacturere of the chips I'll let you know.

Yeah, I've got both the chips at the very top of your post. The first one is just a plastic chip with a glossy label on it. It's light, but the label muffles the 'plastic' sound, so that helps. No metal inserts on those. Of all the plastic chips out there, I have to say that this one is my favorite.
The second chip is a composite. It's got a much better feel and is slightly heavier. The majority of the chips like these have a matt, texturized label in the middle, which makes them feel surprisingly like ChipCo ceramics. Overall they feel and sound pretty good.
Cheers,
John

Pokerchipreviews (john),
First of all, thanks for you site. Its a great contribution to us wanna be WSOP players.
I have a specicif question about your comment above. You just mentioned thats probably the best plastic chip out there, but why does it get such a low rating then? Is it very plasticky feel? Woiuld that be better or the 13G Casino or the new nexgens.
Btw, are you going to do a review for Casino4you.there chips are pretty expensive but seem to be the middle of the road chip?
Thanks for all your help.

I'm not a fan of plastic chips in general. I have yet to handle a plastic chip that remotely felt/sounded like a 'real' casino chip. That's the reason for the low ratings. Yes..it feels like plastic. Not good. It's the "best" (MHO) because it does NOT include a metal slug and it had a decal. Both significantly help the sound made by it when handling. Still, there are chips out there for less money that handle/feel/sound WAAAAAY better.
The 13G and NexGens smoke the plastic chips in every way.
I'll email Casino4you. Haven't contacted them yet.
Cheers,
John

I just got a set of the Las Vegas chips today and am pretty disappointed with the overall finished quality of them. The chips are good and so are the labels for the most part. They sound very good, very much like Paul-Son chip, but the finished assembly is horrible. There are enough labels misaligned and not fitted into the recessed area so that a stack of 20 will not fit into a standard chip rack, and stacks of 50 fit pretty snug in the aluminum cases that normally have a little extra room with a stack of any of the other chips imported from China. Of the 600 that I got, the only ones that would fit into a rack were two stacks of the black 100 and a stack of the orange 1000 chips. All of the rest of them had off center labels causing the stack to be considerable thicker than they needed to be. A bunch of the red ones had flaws that displayed white scratches on them and about 10% of the purple 500 chips only had partially printed labels. There were also a number of the chips in all denominations that had glue residue on the surface of the labels causing chips to stick together.

Dang, sorry to hear that.
Again, even though I dont suggest cheap chips, the ones I find that are suitable are the 9g Diamonds, 9g Las Vegas (classic inlay) or the 10gram pokerchipcompany chips.

Should've gotten samples first! ALWAYS GET SAMPLES FIRST!!
Dump them back on Ebay if you don't like them.
