Heads-up Dealer plays as small blind?

Posted Sat Nov 20, 2004 6:00 pm GMT by Garth Vader
Hi

I'm new to the forum, and I am not a completely unexperienced poker player. But in a recent home tournament, a friend, who incidently has been playing longer than me, came round to play.

We were playing NL hold 'em. When it came down to only 2 of us left, he was on the button and I threw in the big blind, and he did too. He then pointed out i'd put in too much.

I said "No, when its heads up, blinds work in reverse, dealer plays at small, and gets first move."

He says "No, you're wrong, left of dealer pays small, then dealer pays big."

I then said, in a mocking manner "So left of dealer gets first move at every round of betting?" He says "Yes."

Anyway, we both play everyday, but he plays lots of real money tournaments and has been playing for about 2 years longer than me. His experience and the fact i was not completely definate, made me think he must be right and let him get on with it. The trouble is it's been bothering me ever since, because dealer pays small blind where i play. I assume he has just never noticed who pays the blinds where he plays, as he probably has an auto post checked.

I really even question now whether i'm right!

What is the correct rule? Who is right?

Please help!

Thanks.

I'm no pro, but I'm pretty sure you're right

Dealer is the small blind. That way , as you said, you don't get to act last on pre-flop and on the flop when you're the button.

the dealer is the SB.

Many thanks people. Appreciated.

But just out of curiosity, this rule is not open to interpretation? What i mean is that this rule is THE RULE, you don't playit as you feel fit, my friend wouldn't have been playing with dealer as BB?

Follow up question:

Who gets dealt to first in heads-up? I say the small blind always gets dealt to first, so in heads-up play, the player in dealer position gets dealt to first. I bet two players at my Sunday game on this rule. One guy for $50 and the other for $100. We agreed to going by how they play on the WSOP. I guess I'm going to have to get a tape as proof if I'm correct, unless someone here knows where I can find the rule on the internet.

the dealer position does NOT get dealt to first, in the case of heads up the BB would get dealt to first.

Right. The dealer is the SB and first to act when heads up but he is not dealt to first. The dealer always deals to the other person first.

The player to the left of the player in dealer position.
