A kicker comes into play if two players hold the same winning hand.

Player one AKo
Player two AQo

Board 6 A J 5 2

Player one has A A K J 6 Aces with a King kicker (winner)

Player Two has A A Q J 6 Aces with a queen kicker

Kickers work the same way with two pair, but be careful of a split pot if both players next highest card is on the board as well.

P 1 A4
P 2 A3

Board A 6 6 5 3

P1 A A 6 6 5
P2 A A 6 6 5
Split

Same applies to three of a kind. Hope this helps

Er.. with pairs I think you only count one kicker. As in you both had KK with an Ace kicker. You don't worry about the next card.

NO!!! STOP RIGHT THERE! THIS IS ALL WRONG!

This is all a lot easier if you think of every hand as the best 5 cards that hand can make from the seven cards avaliable!

so using the example above....

you: K6
him: KQ

board K 7 3 A 9

presuming there are no flush possibilities, the hands would be as follows..

you: KKA97
him: KKAQ9

all hold em hands are best 5 cards from the 7 avaliable so you go right down to the bfifth/ card for a kicker if need be.
As you can see, in this example you are the same for first 3 cards but his fourth card is higher, therefore, you lose.

I can only presume that as this pot was split, the only answer can be that all the cards on the board were the same suit. A suit which neither of you held. thus giving you both the exact same flush.

A suit which one of you held a card with would have given one of you a higher flush than the other.
