Depends on the house rules. I think in general, if you bet and were called then yes. Otherwise I'm really not sure.

Generally the first to show is the last raiser (or closest to left of dealer if no one bet on the last round). Then each person in turn has the option to show their cards or muck their cards. Only the first person MUST show. I also think that if you showed your cards you have the option to look at the cards of someone that mucked, but that doesn't happen often. Usually to check for cheating methinks.

Actually, the answer is no in this case. Doesn't matter what position he's in either. He is folding. His question was if he surrenders, which is a fold. Now, keep in mind this is only the case if he does this during his turn, not after the hand is dead. If you surrender after the hand is dead, the rules above apply.

I'm assuming he meant at showdown

well, in most home games it's considered rude and unfriendly to not to show your hand even if it's losing Wink. However, in casinos you will obey the rules that were already said above, and have the ability to muck.

I guess that's a regional thing. Every home game I've been to has considered mucking the losing hand to be standard

It's important to note that if you choose not to reveal at the showdown, you no longer have any claim to the pot, even if you would have won. Sometimes people miss that while their opponent caught their miracle card, that card also completes your flush or full house, and then muck their winning hand.

Other posters have mentioned situations where someone intended to muck his cards at the showdown, so he wouldn't have to reveal them, but didn't relinquish the cards, and then tried to claim the pot when he realized his hand was best.

It's usually okay for the winner to ask the loser if he can see the losing hand, and it's considered polite to honor such requests, but it's considered rude to ask too often.

lol... agreed. standard practice here to NOT show your hand if you don't wanna stab at the pot. of curse... only if you're not the person being called.
