suggestion (plz help)

I currently host a friday night no limit texas holdem tournament. There seems to be quite a large problem that I have figured out why this occurs but I have not a real good idea on how to beat it.

Buy-In: $5
18 people
500 chips each
Blinds start at 1-2, then increase every 20 minutes.
2-4
3-6
4-8
5-10
10-20
15-30
20-40
25-50
50-100
75-150
100-200
and so on...
With the above information, the tournament lasted only abuot 4.5 hours.

The main issue here is that my friends, who haven't had too much experience with poker, always call the big blind or call the raise before the flop. They even call large bets on the flop and turn with hardly any outs. The only time they really fold is when they have absolutely nothing, or realize they won't win after seeing the river.

I've had this problem before and I thought I had solved it. I had the blinds start real low to allow myself to play more hands. I would get a good hand, then make large bets and pick up huge pots.

The problem that is happening now is that even when I play 1/20 hands and raise before the flop more than I need to, there are still atleast 2 or more other people calling me. Even with my good hand against their probably not so good hand, I still get outdrawn and end up losing the pot.

Over the tournament we just had, I ended up in 4th place, prizes awarded to the top 3. My strategy of being very conservative and just picking up every 20th pot or so got me here. The problem was, was that I was last in chips with 4 people left. The other player first in chips had nearly 6x as many chips as me and the player 3rd in chips had nearly 3x as many chips as me.

I had plenty of chips to survive the blinds but any hand I played and when I would raise before the flop, they would re-raise me all-in. So I pretty much had to pick a hand to go all-in. I was dealt A10 and decided that was good enough in a four handed game. And what do you, my opponent ends up calling with KK and I lose.

I'm wondering if my strategy isn't working properly. Maybe I should adjust the blind structure and starting chip amounts? Or maybe my strategy is a good one and I just got unlucky.

It seems like every week a different player wins and there is a different top 6, except for me almost always at the final table, but with not so many chips. I believe this happens because my opponents are always willing to throw in chips even though they have a horrible chance of winning. This would explain why a person gets to the final table nearly every month.

Please tell me what you suggest I do. Thanks.

Sounds to me like you're playing right. When you get good cards, bet heavy and hope for callers.

The thing is, even when I bet big, I still get 2-3 callers and end up losing to a 45 offsuit who gets a lucky draw. I guess I could just go all-in and probably get only one player to call.

i think the problem you're facing is you're playing too tight.. you're suffocating yourself.. a poker pro once said the odds of any card hitting is 50-50.. you either hit it... or you don't.. if these players are all over the place you do have to play more solid hands... but instead of just premium hands try also expanding to suited connectors.. 3-4 suited can be a hand you come in for for a raise...say the flop come up 3-3-J... then you go at it.. with weak you have to get an EXTREME table image.. i'm not talking about making them think you snowboard or anything just play straighforeward.. bet the hands you have.. check and fold when you miss.. don't chase.. you have to play fundamentally better than weak players.. when you raise.. don't make weak raises.. 3 times the big blind should be enough.. if they still follow with garbage raise more go to 4x 5x whatever it takes to get your message across.. you hit top pair.. don't make the min bet.. bet the amount that's in the pot.. (you raise 3x BB to $3.. you got to callers.. the pots at 12$) you hit top pair on the flop you bet $12.. don't be afraid to lose some money.. if they don't have a hand they'll fold cause they know you're betting the best hand.. once you take control of them and they know that you're a tight player you'll get alot of foldouts (when you bet they'll just fold).. when that happens you start to make plays on them.. bet once and a while when you miss a flop.. and they'll fold.. and if they tease you (name calling is just an example i had to go through) calling you tighty Mctight tight.. you know you've acomplished what you wanted.. i love the feeling i get when they teased me all night for playing tight but i walked out with all their money..

Hey ensano we play poker with a tight ass like u say. We call him steel man. Now when we play nobody gives him action. Twisted Evil I haven't seen him win in ages

the thing is that when no one gives you any action.. you get to start bluffing... if no one wants to call your bet... you play more hands and bet when you miss... you have to change up your game... but it's key to have that table image down.... players will give you respect and lay down top pair...
