Hi I'm new to the boards. I've been playing poker for a little while now with some friends a couple times every week and I've done a lot of reading on this site as well as watched the 2004 WSOP on ESPN. I will be going to Atlantic City on 12/30 for sure and maybe once this weekend to just test the water. I'm interested in playing some no limit Texas Hold 'em, preferably at the low blind tables like 2/4. Where are the best places to start out or go? Any advice you have to offer and what is a good amount of cash to bring with me? Keep in mind I am a college student, I'm thinking about $100? Thanks
Dan

Hi Dan
I play in AC all the time. I usually play at The Tropicana. Its a decent room and games go all night long any day of the week. When its busy they have a couple NL tables, some with 1/2 blinds and some 2/4. I think the play on the NL tables is pretty good. They also have all your other standard limit games going on, 2/4, 4/8....
I also goto the Borgata. Awesome room there. They have comfy chairs and plasma TVs all over the place. But I don't know I seem to win more at the Trop.
The Taj also has a big room but I have never played there. I don't think the games go all night long.
Anyway I hope this helps some. If you have any other questions, post them and I will try to reply.
Have fun there and good luck.
Keith

You'll have no problems finding a $1/$2 NL game anywhere in town on the weekend. Minimum buy-in at a $1/$2 NL table is $100, max ranges from $200 to unlimited depending on house rules. I wouldn't recommend that game without $200 or $300 in your pocket. $100 is enough to play $2/$4 limit for a few hours, assuming you play tight. If you want to splash around a bit, I'd recommend $200 there as well.

are you saying that i could play longer on a 2/4 table than on a 1/2 table with the same bankroll say of $100?

I believe Sean was referring to $2/4 Limit Hold em versus $1/2 blinds No Limit. I personally have found most of the No Limit games in Atlantic City dry and boring although others have found them to be good games.
I personally would not waist the gas money to go to AC with only $100 in my pocket. You can lose it all in one hand in NL and if you splash around in a $2/4 limit game to much at the wrong time lose it in just an hour two there. It's also extremely hard to overcome the rake in low limit games.
If you feel you must go I suggest playing the $2/4 limit game. You may come back a winner but it won't be easy. You would be better off getting a crew of your college friends together and running a game yourself.
Also you will be able to find just about every limit in most every poker room in AC on the weekends. The Taj will have a full room as they are running another series of tournaments that started on Monday. The Trop is one of my favorite rooms as well and they have a great player comp system. Although the Borgatta is pleasing to eye and other senses I personally can't stand the place. They have some of the worst dealers I have experianced in a poker room.
Peace, HTF

What's the action like compared to lets say partypoker?

2/4 limit gives you some wild action, but the players don't come and go as quickly so you can usually spot the maniacs in about 10 or 15 minutes. Once you get a feel for the table it's pretty easy to take there money when the good cards come.

5 -10 is a straight forward game at the Taj, (retirees, college kids, mixed in w/some wanna be pros) also, forget about raising somebody out of a pot, if they got a piece, they're coming with you.
Last weekend, sat down at hte 1 -2 NL at the Taj for a 30 hour session and had a blast. . .sat down w/$200 and worked it to $700 before giving most of it back when aces got cracked twice w/in half an hour.
The biggest point in the game . . . in 1 -2 NL, play doesn't start until the flop. . . well maybe because I'm LAG i get 10 times the action everybody else gets but for example. . . raise $15 EP w/red jacks and we take the flop 6 handed . . I got sick of people calling me preflop w/crap so I raised preflop $25 w/suited A J ( a hand i almost never raise with) and 4 others came in w/me. . .but when guy's girl friend raises $15 in LP everybody can't fold fast enough.
it didn't matter if i limped, raised $5 or $20 or even $25, i got called. and if I missed the flop, hell, nobody can outplay six players in a raised pot. . . so, table image VERY IMPORTANT.
Have fun and just make sure you bring enough cash to last you through out the day. Because ATMs have a daily limit.

I've only been a few times and I played at the Trop each time. I like the room and I like the NL tables (that's all I play after getting my aces cracked by 3 5 off in $2/$4). I'd recommend buying in with a minimum of $200 if you can swing it. I played for 20 hours on $200 that I had won earlier on the Let it Ride table. It was lots of fun and the players were diverse. Be prepared for big preflop raises when you play on the weekend though. The first hand I played on the NL tables a guy raised $20 preflop with K9 off. He had quite a few callers and bet it all the way to the river without even catching a pair. Needless to say, he bought in for $750 in about an hour. He lost it all. If only I'd gotten cards in that hour. Anyway, just remember that the chips are just that....chips. Play like you're not afraid of losing the money, but play smart and you'll do fine.
Oh yeah, don't let those guy intimidate you. It's a little scary when you sit down at the poker table in a casino for the first time. Just play like you would with your buddies in a home game. Once you sit there long enough, you'll have made plenty of friends (at least I did, but that could be because I'm a girl) and it'll be just like playing at home except you have a beerwench and a dealer.

Well you intimidate everyone Sean. I wonder if I played with you last time I was there?

I mostly play limit, so I doubt it. You should PM me the next time you make the trip, though. Some NL would be a good change of pace.

Will do. It'll probably be sometime in late January or early February. I can't talk the hubby into a gambling frenzy just yet after he just bought me $4k worth of furniture. Well, at least not for a month or so. Then I'll have a "what have you done for me lately?" approach.
I'm just kidding by the way. I'd never ever say that to him. He does too much for me already.

I won't repeat what everyone here has said except to advise you to play at the Tropicana and fold your first hand. After you get that first hand out of the way it is amazing how your nerves calm down. I remember my first real casino like it was yesterday, T3o... Fold... Felt much better. Unless you have AA KK etc.

Oh yeah, one more tip. Don't, I repeat, DON'T sit down at the table after you have been drinking for 6 or more hours. I did that the first time I was in a casino. What a mistake. Don't have your first beer until you've taken your first pot and then alternate with coffee. Just a suggestion from someone who's made that mistake.
