I'm a newbie or so...Questions - Answers very much appreciat

Well I'm kinda of a newbie. I've never really played poker at a REAL landbased casino before...But have played small amounts of cash at PartyPoker, and TruePoker and on occassion transferred money from my sportsbook to a poker website which was connected to each other.

I'm probably down over $400-500 USD playing poker online - it seems fun, and I found that PartyPoker have tons of players and TruePoker has the BEST 3D Graphics anywhere. I'm still kinda of a newbie/intermediate. I learn the game alot since my playinf days...but I am often tempted into playing $50 or $100 NL games and somehow lose to a bad beat...lose so some guy with a pair of Aces when I had a possible straight or flush but the last 2 cards (rivered) never went my way and I played the odds...grrr...

Well just curious?

Do people online make money in Poker?
Any recommendations on website/books to read to learn MORE on Holdem - I found this site very informative especailly the 'strategy' and 'bluffing' section.

First time poster and visitor here - any comments very much appreciated.

I find that the $5/$10 tables the players are VERY SHARP as opposed to the $0.50/$1 or the $1/2 or the $2/$4... Any advice on how to play is great or QUICK POINTERS?

Also, JUST CURIOUS HOW MUCH HAVE YOU GUYS LOST BEFORE YOU ACTUALLY STARTED 'WINNING CONSISTENTLY'? AND DOES ANY WIN CONSISTENTLY HERE ONLINE AS WELL - IF SO, WHAT TABLES YOU PREFER? Tourney, NL,...?

Thanks

I started playing at a live game last year and immediately was hooked. After paying some dues ($300-$500 on 2/4) I started coming out just ahead-but the game kept me coming back.

This spring I started playing online. So far, I am probably making $20/hour on average. In the last 2 weeks, I made over $2000 (which was more like $50 and hour considering I play no more than 2 hours per day).

As far as no catching your flush draw-you will only get 30% of them, not a very good bet. In NL, I never want to be the one trying to make a hand. I dont care how many outs I have (unless the pot odds are huge in my favor), I want to have my hand made before calling a big bet.

Thanks Dave.

You seem very knowledgable...which do you prefer online or poker rooms? I recently went to a casino up here in Vancouver and the employee said it Cost $100 buyin or something like that to play but notice a lot of OLDER players and they look like pros... maybe I should just stick to online.

Congrats DAVE on your wins...from losing $500 or so playing $2/$4...and now winning $2000 every 2 weeks thats a GREAT JOB you're doing!

Are you playing in No Limit tables, Tournaments or still the $2/$4?

Any advice is very much appreciated.

Any sites or books you recommend? And what sites do you plat at sir?

Thanks in advanced for answering my questions guys!

I didnt read any books, but I think that I get a pretty good read on people. I am a bond trader too-so the math part was a breeze. I am not making $2000/week, the last 2 weeks was especially good.

I like partypoker, just because I play a ton of sit and go (single table) tourneys. Out of 10 people, 5 are dead money. So if you dont get in the money 60-70% of the time, you need to look at what you are doing. The ring games on partypoker are OK, but there are cheaters out there. I watch for players raising, reraising, and then folding a $100+ pot on the river w/ a single bet to call. There are also a ton of cheaters in the multitable tourneys that disconnect when someone is all in. You do have to learn how to play there. It is important to know that people are stupid and will call all the way to the river w/ junk, regardless of pot odds. Play tight and you should make money.

I play $30 or $50 sit and gos and $2/4, $3/$6 or $5/$10 limit games or $50 or $100 buy in NL games. Avoid the $25 NL games they are crap.

Cash management is another important factor. Here is what works for me: I fund $200. When I get to $400, I will take out the original $200. When I get back to $400 or so, I will step up to $50 sit and gos. W/ $250 for each win, a good streak can really add to the bank roll. If I get some wins, I will take out anything over $500. I found that when I use to get on a good streak, I was way to tempted to take a shot at $10/$20 tables where things can go down the tubes in a hurry. If I lose my money, I take a week or so off and try to recall if it was bad play or just bad beats.

Anyone else?

Hey, thanks for the compliment on the strategy sections.
I lost a bit in my early playing days online. In my own defense, I only had read one or two books before I starting making a profit. My first book was Ken Warren's "Winner's Guide to Texas Holdem Poker". It's a pretty good book. The turning point was after I read "Holdem Poker" by Gary Carson. I don't know if it was the book that did it, or just the fact that I put in enough hours of playing to start recognizing plays and strategy.
I wish I could play more online like I used to, but most of my online time is invested into running this site and a few others. When I do play online it's almost always playing tournaments. I've played them all. Paradisepoker, UltimateBet, Empirepoker, Partypoker, PokerRoom, DynamitePoker...my desktop is a little cluttered. Since I'm on this tournament kick, I've been playing on PokerStars exclusively recently. Dave B is right that Sit N Go's are a good way to go.
As far as quick pointers, keep playing those odds. Don't get discouraged becase some dope drew out on you. If you really don't like getting drawn out on, play more no limit. If you think someone's on a draw there, you can get them out a whole lot easier by betting a bigger amount.

Another n00b here .. Played w/ friends, a bit online, once in a B&M (serious beating) .. enjoy the game .. want to get better.

So.

What's a good book/site to build a solid foundation from? I mean basic things like what "Freeroll" means and "Sit 'N Go" ..

TIA!

Also, one specific question ..

When I first started looking at online Poker sites, the first place I went was Poker.com, simply because it seemed obvious. However when I read reviews on websites of the most popular Poker Sites (Party Poker, Empire, etc.) I never see Poker.com mentioned .. Why is that?

Why don't you like the gameplay - is it too slow?

I think the players and game play is a bit slower - but then again i suck Sad

I just lost $200 (the money i just deposited 4 days ago Sad
