This may be a stupid question, but I had some friends have an arguement because one said his five card hand was the community cards and he choose not to use his pocket cards. Is this possible. Couldn't they both say they weren't going to use their cards and split the pot. It seemed bogus to me but was just wondering if you could chose to not use you pocket cards.

in NLHE the best 5 card hand from the 7 avaliable (2 in your hole and 5 on board) wins.
So yes, he can use only the 5 cards on the board, but if this is the case then the other guy can too. So yes split pot.

In texas holdem you do not have to declare which cards you will play. Best hand amongst your 7 is your claim to the pot.

I think he may be alluding to the fact that the guy decided not to use the pockets even though they may have made the better hand, resulting in a split pot with another player.
In that respect, I do believe the rule is you MUST make the BEST hand possible using all cards....maybe the guy called the community cards as best hand so his buddy wasnt wiped out, etc....OR a form of collusion was in the works....you could use 2 players to get raising and reraising others...then if they fold before the showdown - the 2 colluding players can split the pot with that strategy.
So no, you cannot call out the community cards as your hand to play IF your pockets make a stronger hand.

Exactly. Zig is talking about 'cards speak' which is the rule in almost every casino/card room I know of. Some home games will play 'player speak' where you declare your own hand. So ultimately it depends on the way you play. If you play 'player speak' then what he did was legal. If you play 'cards speak' and one person has a better hand, then that player wins.
