The jump from Limit?

Posted Mon Dec 13, 2004 10:42 pm GMT by Celestialegends
Well, I've been mostly a limit player till now, I tried a few games at the $25 Buy-In tables, I did okay, I lost my entire buy-in my first time, but after playing a few times I managed to make 5-7 dollars a session ... not much, but it was fun. None of the really "I made 200 bucks in this NL session this one time" experiences yet, but anyway ...

I'm still playing alot like my Limit self, playing tight, folding when I think I'm beat, etc. Raising with good hands, trying to steal the blinds ... I find stealing the blinds quite diffrent in NL.

Anyway, can anyone give tips for making the jump from limit to no-limit? How diffrent are the games? Any literature thats recommended? (I know Super System has a section, I tried following it, but I just got ... well, way too over-aggressive. Problably not the book's fault. Besides that, I've only heard/seen the "Champion's guide No-Limit and Pot-Limit Hold'em" which I've heard bad reviews for. Are there any books that are good? Sites? (I'm reading flopturnriver.com, which has been quite helpful.)

Or just NL tips in general would be nice ^_^

The two game are very different. I always seem to do poorly if I play limit poker right after playing no-limit.

The one thing I can think of that is a huge difference between no limit and limit is bluffing. Bluffing becomes a huge part of the game in no-limit. Along with this comes more of a need to be able to read people. Also, Hands like small PP go up in value in NL because you will win a big pot when you flop a set. Drawing hands definetly seem to decrease in value because when you have a draw on the flop, somebody with a made hand will almost certainly bet enough so that you are not getting sufficient pot odds. So limping in with connectors often becomes a losing play. But, It works in reverse too. You want to be the one betting a lot to force drawing hands out of the pot.

I guess these might seem a little obvious, but thats all that I could think of off the top of my head. Its probably stuff that youve read about already.

fist off all limit players are always hard pressed to find a happy medium.. like you said you tried playing agressively but went crazy.. that's happened to us all.. i play both limit and nolimit and i'm by far betting at n/l.. what you have to do first off is forget all the steadfast rules of pot odds.. sometimes in no limit you have to gamble.. you have to get in there with all your chips knowing you're the big underdog.. cause when they pay off.. man.. they pay off.. and thats why you can't stick to it too much.. granted you don't go all in with an inside straight draw.. but.. again.. sometimes.. you'll raise all in with an inside straight draw.. because you know this lying sack of cheese that bet at you has nothing.. for players that started playing limit that's the hardest part of switching.. think of value raises.. but to the extreme.. the only way to adapt is to get used to it.. reread the super system again and take notes... then.. just play.. if you're playing online you can play at lower stakes.. i recommend 5$ buy in n/L.. you're not risking too much and you get to learn the balance of it.. then when you've got it down move up to the 25$ tables..
