So im playing at my usual card room when the lights go out and the swat team shows up. They put an assault rifle to my head, everyone is cuffed, the dealers and owner are taken to jail and worst of all I am charged with a class A misdemeanor with a minimum fine of 500 bucks. Do the police not have murders and rapists to go after to?

They do, but then they also have donuts to eat, and busting a poker game leaves a lot more time for those crispy cremes.

was it a raked game?
Posted Tue Dec 14, 2004 1:30 pm GMT by fundmyhabit
I live in College Station and you answered your own question... do the cops have rapists and murderers to go after? not in college station.
Posted Tue Dec 14, 2004 1:35 pm GMT by fundmyhabit
was this in c/s or bryan? there is no mention of it on the c/s police blotter...
Posted Tue Dec 14, 2004 6:30 pm GMT by secondtolast
It was in C/S, I just got back from the justice of the peace = 554 dollar fine 25 hours of community service....im gonna have to play poker to pay the fine.

You're full of crap, dude. This would have made the news. Post a link to a news story or your arrest ticket or else find another site for your fictional writing.

That is a bit harsh Scott!!! Perhaps you could have masked your disdain with a more eloquently framed question...
Posted Wed Dec 15, 2004 9:28 am GMT by fundmyhabit
secondtolast' story is true. the raid was actually in Bryan at a place i've played at a few times in the past. fortunately i wasn't there this Monday. The waitress was arrested for selling alcohol without a permit, the dealers were arrested for promoting a gambling establishment and all the players were arrested for gambling... alll misdemeanors.

Think about how stupid the average person in the world is...then realize half the people are dumber than that. |
ya gotta love the irony . .. the person telling me to "be nice to people" has a quote in his signature line talking about how stupid people are.

Holy Crap!! I live in College Station and I host a game!! Good thing we're going on break for a month. Also, my game is legal as far as I can tell.
wait, in the news article it says they were charged with possession of gambling parapharnalia.... i own a table and chips and cards, is that a crime?
Posted Wed Dec 15, 2004 12:00 pm GMT by fundmyhabit
your game is legal redd38.
i don't understand gambling paraphenalia either.

Oh Scott... The true irony is that I often berate people for bad spelling as well... And now realise that I have spelt realise incorrectly!
All I meant was that it was a bit sharp to berate the bloke and I really do believe that online, my sig definitely stands!
Posted Wed Dec 15, 2004 12:03 pm GMT by Idaho
They put a gun to your head? That's somewhat unnecessary.
It seems pretty stupid to make this illegal when there is nothing stopping you playing online. Although the charge of selling alcohol without a licence is fairly uncontestable.

Idaho...
Everything was free at this cardroom. You just tipped the waitress. You did not have to pay for drinks or food. But Texas law says you cant provide alcohol if you are charging for them to be there without a license.

Yeah, it was a bit sharp but it wouldn't have been the first time some lonely sap posted a fake story just to get attention. My apologies to the original poster for jumping to conclusion but remember to provide proof if you're going to post a crazy story like that one. I still question whether a SWAT team member held a gun to his head though. But he's entitled to his own embellishment if he wishes.
And by the way, I know what you mean about spelling. If I had a nickel for every time some online poker-playing fool wrote "loose" instead of "lose" I'd be a rich man.

Totally out of order Scott, you have no reason on which to base your remarks. Are you the police chief in whereveritwas junction?
Unless you actually have hard evidence to prove he is lying i think you should apologise.
And stop being such a curmudgeon!

Well I just saw the news story and its tight I am in the paper. There was definetly 2 tables there and not 10 thats kinda funny. And yes a large black man put an assault rifle at my head. The judge informed me that atleast 3 undercover cops had been coming to the cardroom on a regualr basis and 1 of them was sitting 2 seats to my right on the night of the sting; just wonderful.
Posted Wed Dec 15, 2004 1:21 pm GMT by fundmyhabit
second-- did you play the 3/6 or the 10/20?

Ahhh, the truth finally comes out! These games only get busted when the cops lose money :D
Posted Wed Dec 15, 2004 1:42 pm GMT by redd38
fundmyhabit... are you one of the undercover cops??? If so you're never coming to my game again :D
Posted Wed Dec 15, 2004 1:48 pm GMT by fundmyhabit
of course not

I spose you gotta remember this is Texas and a poker game, isn't it the norm for people to carry guns to these games? I am led to believe it happens.
Also i may be wrong in this but i'm pretty sure internet gambling is illegal in the US. i think it comes under the "gambling over wire" section of that law. I may be wrong in this tho.

Ah you did apologise nice. I missed page 2 of this thread. I apologise (altho i stand by the curmudgeon comment 8) )
| secondtolast wrote: | | And yes a large black man put an assault rifle at my head. |
Would it have been less scary if it had been a large redneck holding a rifle to your head?

Who in College Station, Texas hasn't had a large redneck hold a rifle to their head? Odds are the large black man was also a large redneck.

Luckily I was playing the 3/6 and only lost a buy in of 100. And ya all of us were saying atleast it was a SWAT team and not rednecks stealing all the cash.
Posted Thu Dec 16, 2004 9:39 am GMT by fundmyhabit
second-- i've probably played with you.. i have been there the last few weeks and decided to take a break... that ended up being a good choice.

it was probably confiscated because it was used in an illegal poker room. If it was just used at home fora friendly game it would not be illegal. As an example lets say you own a small scale to weigh things. that in itself is not illegal. If you use that scale to weigh marijuana and sell that then the scale becomes drug paraphealia and it will get confiscated if you are arrested. So Redd38 you should not have a problem if your game is legal.

I just picture the scene.... Huge pot, you are on a royal after the flop... Everyone is all in to you...
"Ah, all of those bad beats are just a distant memory get ready to drag in those chips..."
"THIS IS A RAID... NOBODY MOVE... NO! DON'T RAKE IN THOSE CHIPS YOUNG MAN!!!"
Normally, my alarm clock goes off at this juncture!
Whatever hand you had, if you were winning that would be the bad beat to beat all bad beats!
Posted Fri Dec 17, 2004 9:38 am GMT by fundmyhabit
that would definitely suck Zippy.
Posted Thu Feb 03, 2005 2:24 pm GMT by TGuns
Wow, that totally sucks. Sorry to hear it...
Lt. Tom Dickson (ha) said “This was more than just a friendly game.”
What a crock. If private poker cash games are illegal in TX why isn't online poker as well? Also, seems like they placed a lot of the cause on serving alcohol, and took it to the max after that. I would say don't serve alcohol, or invite off-duty cops to play in.
Posted Wed Feb 16, 2005 4:22 pm GMT by BigSlugger09
If I were an undercover cop I would ask to be assigned to an investigation on some illegal poker game just so I could play poker and get paid while doing it
Then I would report back that everything was fine so far, but it still required more investigation.
