Keeping Stats

Posted Wed Dec 15, 2004 12:41 pm GMT by Manila Folder
I've begun playing more regularly, both online and live play. Are there any guidelines or resources on what stats I should be keeping and what I should be looking for? I've seen that as a rule of thumb, a minimum 1000 hands is needed to do an analysis. Is that right? Thanks!

Actually for a statistical analysis to have meaning it is said that the number of subject should be between 30 and 300. However those are the limits for scientific studies to by statisically useful. I have no idea what it would be for cards.

However, I would think it might be higher for a few reasons: The main one being that In scientific studies they are usualyl looking for certain things to happen and the variations of these things are few in numbers like 4-5 different things happen. Whereas in poker the possible combinations of hands and probabilities in flops and things of that nature make the number of posssible hands astronimical compared to .... 4-5 possibilities.

Prior to the corporate word I was a mathematician in another life, and recall that a larger sample size would provide for more accurate analysis. My question is what is it that I'm analyzing? Aside from whether I'm winning or losing money, I'm not sure what I'm looking for. I've read that you should keep notes or stats on your game to find leaks, but I'm not sure what info I need to keep. Anyone have any suggestions?

I only keep stats on buy-ins vs pay outs so I know when my best weeks/months are in a year. There is no need to keep stats on flop %, showdowns won/lost etc in my opinion - you learn as you go and stats apply in the long run, not to a single individual situation so are fairly useless when at the table.........
