Help! Home poker game

Posted Wed Dec 15, 2004 7:55 pm GMT by sog35
I need some advice on a home poker game. This is a non money game just for pride. There are usually 8-10 players. We start with $2000, and the big blind starts at $50. Every 30 minutes the big blind doubles.

How should i play under such rules? Do i need to play more loose/aggressive because of the blinds increasing so fast? Or do i just wait it out?

those aren't particularly fast changing blinds. 30 minutes i think is about standard... especially for home games.

tight and aggressive... always... regardless of the blinds.

so after 90 minutes the blinds will be about $2000, exactly 1/10 of my beginning stack.

so should i still play tight/aggressive?

i'd start your BB at $20... or perhpas $30. $50 is a tad high.

This is not true at all. When the blinds are high compared to your chip stack, you want to play looser than normal, and when the blinds are low compared to your chip stack, you are going to want to tighten up.

For example, if the big blind were $10 and you had $100, you want to play very loose. But if the blind was $1 and you had $1000 in chips, you would want top play very tight.

You would probably do just fine playing your normal game here, but remember to adjust it to the type of people you are playing against.

I find that, in no-limit, a BB of about 1% of my stack fits my style of play best

EDIT*** I meant a BB of about 2% is good for me (so $40 starting BB in your case)

Thanks guys for the great advice. This weekend I won 2 out of 3 games. The first game I won, the best hand I had all night was the last hand, two pair. At first it was hard to be so patient as my chip stack was shrinking and other loose players stacks were growing.

But i was patient, and when i got a good hand i busted them!

My question is: when you play a tight/aggressive style do you bluff? and if so when? I only bluffed once. It was only two people left on a hand, everyone else folded. The flop was all numbers. I sensed weakness so I bluffed double the pot. I had low pair. The guy folded, he said he had two pair, thought i had a triple. Of course I said nothing. Was that a decent time to bluff? When else should i bluff/semiBluff?

Congrats on the wins.

Its hard to say when exactly to bluff at the pot, but I can think of one specific example off the top of my head. If you put in a substaintal raise before the flop with a hand like AK or AQ, and the flop comes down all rags it can be a good play to bluff/semi-bluff here. In this situation, the other guy will likely have also missed the flop because they called your raise and shouldnt have low cards in there hand. Also, because you raised a lot before the flop, he might have put you on a high pocket pair.

And, of course, whenever you sense weakness in your opponent you should go after them.

The key is that this is a play money game. Your goal is sit around for strong hands and then bet them strong, thats all there is to it. Will be real easy to take 1st. If you are actually playing against people in play money that start to tighten up then bluff a little bit show your cards and then go back to tight and betting big hands strong(sometimes checkraising-which makes people angry too:)).

Generally speaking with home game tournaments you want to play really tight until a few players have been knocked out. Later on when the blinds are higher and there are less people in the game you can loosen off a bit but try to keep your tight image. This way you can steal the blinds when you are on the button and bluff a few hands. When the flop comes with two of the same card e.g 9h, 9c, 6d. This is a great opportunity to take down the pot. When it gets down to 3 or 4 players agression is the key.
