Built a Table

Posted Sat Dec 18, 2004 1:11 pm GMT by Shameless
My friend and I just completed our first table build... we think it came out pretty damn good considering we've never built anything before.

Let us know what you think!

That's a lot.

Congratulations on your table. Personally, I think you did a lot of unnecesary work, but Im sure when it was all completed you had a nice sense of pride.

Your price for materials was a little on the high side but not much, most 8' holdem/poker tables without cupholders or wooden racetracks can be made for under $200 (under 150 if you find sales).

Looks good. I'm a little surprised you didn't add cup holders considering you spent a lot of money and put a lot of work into it. Looks like you have a nice poker table, though. One of these days I'm gonna build a table. It's just not the same at the kitchen table.

I like the spot for the pot and the flop. Creative.

Wow. I am impressed. You guys did some amazing work.

I was (in a former life) a journeyman carpenter, and I know craftsmenship and care (as well as pride) when I see it. I, personally, would have kept the finished product much more simple, but she's a fine piece of work.

I recently knocked out two tables in about 5 hours for a tournament, and naturally they are nowhere near as nice as what you guys came up with. I don't think your figure is too radically high at $200 plus. I haven't yet built the edge cushions for my tables and I studied your method closely. Your finished cushion looks very, very good. A friend of mine spent as much as you did and blew the whole thing on the cushions. They are totally horrible. Nice job there.

That is one crazy looking table. Very unique and seems fun.

I also just got done building a page on how to make a poker table.

not really... i didn't really read his instructions just looked at pics (nice job guys)... but if you use top quality product throughout... you'll easily spend 250-300 on supplies.

there are, of course, many ways to cut costs... but by doing so you're generally cuting the quality of the materials used (usually with respect to the wood you use).

i'm not a fan of the table shape or design... but think y'all did a fine job and if you're happy with it then that's all that matters! well done.

My friend made a table that is much nicer than that one for about $150 and there isn't one thing low quality about it. He didn't even use those cheap ass folding legs. He could easily get $400 for it if he decided to sell it.

good for him...

post the supply list... i'm currious to see how he was able to do so.

It's on the top of my list of things to do next time I see him.

I don't know why you have to rip into this guy about how much he spent. It's his first table, it looks damn good and he enjoyed making it and he's nice enough to make a site for others to learn from.

I think it's pretty cool and definitely unique with the design. Also, how "nice" a table is, is a subjective assessment. So I don't think you need to tell him he overpaid and his table isn't "nice" enough.

Looks great to me, Shameless. I'm jealous.

Here is a break down of my costs

Wood - Maple 3/4 $33 x 2 = $66
Foam (50% off sale at JoAnns) = $30
Fabric 3 yards = $9
Vinyl = $6
Table Legs at Home Depot = $16

Total = $127

I did get some great deals though on the fabric and vinyl.

Thanks man, it's all good.

I realize we paid more than most would for a table of this type and size... but the reasons are many:

- We wanted very durable and "fuzz free" material, so we paid good money for the cloth, PLUS we had to get two colors so we paid good money TWICE for the cloth.

- The foam for the table was unusually expensive at $22 for 1/8" headliner material. But we got it at Jo-ann Fabrics and we were anxious to finish.

- We wanted the whole folding table rather than just the legs because the inlays are simply press fitted into positon and without support on the underside, they'd be able to push through one way or the other. With the folding table supporting all the cuts we made, the inlays are flush and aren't going anywhere.

I appreciate the positive AND negative feedback, that's why I posted. Thanks guys.
