You should have at least 50 times the small blind to sit down. Depending on the size of chips in play, you may want to buy less, just so that your stacks are more managable (esp if you are winning). Just make sure you always have enough on the table to bet big if you get a great hand-cash in your pocket does not play!

Most people online are not very smart. From what I have seen, casinos are different, usually harder. You can also learn much more about the people at the table. How quickly do they move in, do they already have chips in their hand when you are moving your bet in. Online, someone might be taking a leak, when you think they are comtemplating a big move or a lay down.

Here's another view:
Casino play at 5/10. Buy in $200 red ($5), $10 white ($1), $10 in $.50 tokens (tips only--don't tip more than .50/hand--go ahead call me cheap, but you are there to leave with as much money as possible).
That's a $220 total buy in. I disagree with Dave above. $100 is too little. When I see someone do that I move on them hard and fast. One big hand goes south and their stack is down 65%--makes them too timid. When your stack gets down to $60-75 you buy back in for $150 or $200. That doesn't mean you lose more than your $220 initial investment BUT if you decide you have to tighten up and wait for a hand the worst thing that can happen is that you go all in and can't make big money on that big hand when you finally catch it.
Nothing dumber than those guys who keep buying in four, five times or more at $80 or $100 a pop. You see that guy and you go after him like a barracuda. He's playing scared money. He plays back you know he's hit and just get the hell out of his way--then when he hits his dream hand there's nobody in there with him. Your job is to bust that guy.

The place I play has 4/8 (and 2/4 3/6 on up) that uses $1 chips. $200 in $1s is a monster stack-so some go $100 down to $50 the pop for another $100.

Well, that makes a difference! What the heck are they doing trying to run a 4-8 game with singles? The Manistee indian casino in Michigan is the only place I've ever played 4-8, but there you get $2 chips and they work well. However, Harrah's (where I usually play) only has $5's, 25's and 100's (and 1's of course). They have a $5-10 game, but also 10/20, 20/40 and 30/60 (the last is H.O.S.E). NO $10 chips! Those $20/40 players frequently have 2 or 3 thou in front of them IN $5 CHIPS! What a mess. It's nuts. To make matters worse they allow no racks on the table. I know several casinos in Vegas permit racks, so I don't understand their objection.

for 5-10
id say 200 to 250 buy in should be good
i normoly play 2-4 at Foxwoods
since i work for a living and cant see to put a 3rd of my check into a poker game just yet.
i buy in for 100 to 140
At Foxwoods
thay have Two Doller chips
so i try to get 90% in 2's and the rest in white
for tips and small blind
at foxwoods u cant keep the rack on the table i belive .
so i just place it under one of the food/drink carts next to me and when its time to go home (i live just 20mins away at max)I just pull it out and stack my chips.

I usually play at a local indian casino in a 4-8 kill game, and they play 4-8 with all $1 chips. Keep in mind that the kill game becomes 8-16 frequently, so big bet calls and raises become somewhat of a pain.
They don't have 5-10 there. They do have an 8-16 game that is played with $2 chips, which is the same as $1 chips at 4-8.
Psychologically though, it is very nice to have a huge stack of chips.
