Hello and help needed (chips research/questions)

Posted Tue Dec 28, 2004 12:56 am GMT by Mechanic
I am a semi-long time lurker here and many times wanted to jump into a thread but never did. I decided to jump into the the board with a question. Let me say in advance that I have really enjoyed all of your input and thoughts since I have been reading here.

Forgive me if this is a long'sih!!

Well, like many of you, I am in the market for a set of chips and have decided to stretch my budget to afford a nice 500 chip set. I have ordered samples of the Chipco Rounders, Blue Chip Isthmus, and NJ Skulls.

I got to see skulls in a local shop and think they are not what I have in mind as an ideal set. I like the more traditional (clay feel, edge spots etc) chips and -thought- I had settled on the Isthmus chips. Concerns over Blue Chip weight and quality left me concerned but the new Paulson's Isthmus chip was HUGE news I was very happy to hear!!!!

Today I go to the mailbox and my Rounders samples had arrived. I am very impressed with the quality/weight/sound of this chip. They are close to $1 a chip so they get knocked out by the Paulson Isthmus by default....right?

Well, this is where I need help/input. I have 2 Fan of Cards original Paulsons (the real deal) and 2 Paulsons presidents chips (all sent as samples to me some time ago). They are SO light and feel terribly cheap. I would rather have an injection molded Chipco if the new Paulson's are going to feel this way.

The ones I have -might- be 8 grams.....based on feel not actual weighing.

Can someone who has hands on with the older Paulson fantasy chips give me an idea on why they are so light/cheap? People are paying $2.50 a chip for these and they feel far less professional than the Rounders set.

Also, can any of the people who review/sell chips share your expectations for the new Paulson Isthmus chips. Is the "real casino weight etc" just more marketing? Why would Paulson market true casino weight/quality to the home user? Obviously the orignial Paulson company did not do this with the fan of cards etc...

I am eager to hear your feedback. Thanks for your time and input....

Casino weight is between 9.5 and 10.5 grams normally, so if they live up to their promises, then that's the ballpark you can expect to see them in.

Cheers,
John

Here's some background info on ceramic (Chipco) vs. clay (Paulson etc.). And review the rest of this thread.
http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=1444241&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=14&vc=1

So once you decide if you want ceramic or clay (I assume those are your choices since you want something good and are in the $1 per chip range), then I strongly suggest getting samples, like you're doing.

Another post earlier today in this board gives some places to look.

As far as your other question... good clay chips are about 10 grams, so they may feel lighter than other chips you may have, like your Rounders ceramic samples. But they work great in actual use, both in a casino and at home. Put ten of them in a stack, and they feel good.

Thanks for the replies.....

I read pokerchipreviews.com frequently as I get samples to compare my thoughts with yours. You seem to think like I do....or rather vice versa. Smile Your site is far more helpful than you can imagine!!!!

Tomb, I appreciate your thoughts as I guess you answered the question I was meaning to ask....and that is 'should a 9-10g chip feel lighter than a chipco rounder chip of very similar weight?'

I have played casino cards but at the time was not focused on weight / feel etc as I had no use for my own chips. Something I regret now that I am in the market.

FYI - Weight & Thickness...

I weighed these Chipcos a while back...
Just weighed them and here are the results:

Buypokerchips.com Archtype
$1 = 10.47 grams
$5 = 10.40 grams
$25 = 10.31 grams
$500 = 10.61 grams

Apache Las Vegas casino:
$1 = 10.55 grams

Crystal Oyster casino:
$1 = 10.54 grams

Homepokerchips.com sample
$100 = 10.18 grams

*** I should bring my customs in to work & weigh them but haven't yet.

For the thickness...
FROM SLOWPLAYRAY a while back:
I finally just made the effort to measure them. Here are the results:

Paulson (Foxwoods):
Diameter = 39.1 mm
Thickness = 3.3 mm

T.R. King:
Diameter = 38.6 mm
Thickness = 3.2 mm

ASM (pokerchips.com):
Diameter = 39.6 mm
Thickness = 3.3 mm

Blue Chip:
Diameter = 39.0 mm
Thickness = 3.2 mm

Chipco:
Diameter = 39.4 mm
Thickness = 3.3 mm

All-In Chips:
Diameter: 40.0 mm
Thickness: 3.4 mm

And there you have it!
