Crystal Oyster Poker Chips-Not Impressed, HELP! |
|
Posted Tue Dec 28, 2004 4:48 am GMT by grandgnu
Hello everyone!
I received a sample of the Crystal Oyster chips from www.holdempokerchips.com and I'm just not feeling them.
Currently I use the Dice chips (14 cents each) but was looking at eventually saving up and paying roughly a buck per chip to get a nice quality set.
I want chips with edge spots, for sure. And I think I like the James Bond chip design more than these Crystal Oysters. But I think what I really dislike about these chips is the feel. It's so flat on the face, no real texture to them.
I'd like a chip with an indented mold on the faces, and obviously denominations as well. What would people recommend (as far as chips AND websites to obtain them at) in the $1 per chip price range (give or take maybe 20 cents either way)?

If that is your goal, you can pretty much eliminate any Chipco composite chip. I believe they make the crystal oysters(correct me if i'm wrong).
If you like the Bond chips, just wait until the new ones from Paulson are available. I think "Paulsonchips" that posts here is currently taking preorders for them, not sure if he has samples yet. There is a thread here somewhere with a link to the preorder site.

Thanks Nutflush, for the reply. I've seen mister Paulsons posts, so that's a possibility for sure.

The Poster on here named Paulson Chips is not actually affiliated with Paulson. Just so you know. Nice Guy Though. Nutflush is refering to the New Bond Chips that are available at dice702 and some other retailers.
However I think the real Vineyards that "Paulson Chips" (the poster) sells are some of the nicest looking chips I have ever seen and they don't have the lame mold that the new Paulson Home chips have. Don't know how expensive they are though.

Well, I'm getting a sample of chips from www.buypokerchips.com as well as T.R. Kings samples. We'll see how it goes. Both sites offer indented molds with true clay chips, so hopefully I'll enjoy the feel of those more.

I have samples of the Modern Clays from bpc (which I think are Blue Chip manufactured), but I went with the Archetype (Chipco) set instead. The Modern Clays were just a little light for my tastes, although they have grown on me. I find myself shuffling those samples a lot when watching TV.

Yeah, I'm getting a modern clay sample. I like the chips that have colors and edge spots similar to what you see on the televised events.

.
Don´t you guys like the Kardwell ( http://www.kardwell.com/casino-pro-chips.htm ) clay chip ?
It seems much more cool than modern clay chips to me.

I think those are ASM chips (horsehead mold), and buypokerchips.com used to have a line of those as well, although they discontinued them. I have samples of both, and I didn't notice much difference except the ASM's are a little heavier. FWIW, looks like the Kardwell's are cheaper.

Don't forget about NJ's clays.....Make sure you look at both the Nevada and Martini Clubs.
Cheers,
John

Hey John, thanks for the info. Checked out your website, lots of great information (although I still HAVE to play with the chips myself first)
Just contacted Nevada Jacks so I can get some sample sets from them as well.

Got in my sample set of 10 chips from buypokerchips.com It's the Modern Clay design.
At first I didn't like them when I took them out of the package. They felt real chalky and rough. But from reading the posts online it looks like you need to break them in. So I've been shuffling them for a bit and I'm really liking these, the look, the edge spots, feel, mold, etc.
Granted they're a bit on the expensive side compared with some other sites. I've got a shipment of TR Kings coming in so I can compare.

Just got the TR Kings in. Didn't really care for them. Their feel was closer to my 11.5 gram Dice chips than my Modern Clays. Granted they're a bit cheaper than the buypokerchips.com ones, but I really like the more expensive ones better.
They look nicer and feel nicer. So I've made my decision, now I just need to come up with a grand to get the set I want.

Grandgnu:
I'll throw out my .02, since I didn't see it mentioned specifically.
Personally, I came to the decision that if I was going to spend "that kind of money" on a chip set, I wanted to do so on chips of MY color choices, MY edge-spot preferences, MY inlay design, etc. I went with a Pokerchips.com custom order that got me exactly what I wanted for a little over $900 (1000 chip order...see my full writeup elsewhere in this forum). The #1 drawback to this route: TIME. Your looking at at least 3 months or so.
Of course it all depends on personal taste, but for the price your willing to pay (a grand), keep in mind you can get totally custom chips for that price. Any number of vendors will do this, although the price-per-chip can be driven by the size of the order.
Best of luck in your quest.

Thanks Manimal. But how do the custom chips compare to the Modern Clays that are available from buypokerchips.com? I really like the feel of the Modern Clays

I think feel wise they're pretty much the same. Pokerchips.com is a great chip. The trade off is you can't get multicolored edgespots so you sacrifice this for custom art & colors... definitely call for samples. There have been some nice pics lately of these. They do have brass flakes which I don't mind but it bothers some. Check out X-files posts for good pics 'though he didn't do inlays. Teekan's are another good example. Here's a link but the pics are small, Cheesy Poker.
I'm sure someone else could provide better links.

Hey Fins!
Hmmmm.......yeah, I see that they don't do the multi-colored edge-spots, which I really like on the buypokerchips.com samples I have.
Well, unless I win at Foxwoods this Thursday, I don't see myself having the scratch to buy any of these chips just yet.

Good luck... post a trip report!

Yeah, read it at lunch... you arogant bastard
Didn't quite see what you got all the slack... I was entertained and informed.
Did you decide to give the 5 $100 Thurs a run to build your BR? ...or are you giving it one more go then decide?
I'll keep a lookout for the next one,

Heh heh, yeah caught some grief from a few posters. Some people just enjoy trolling I guess.
I decided to go up this week because next Thursday I have to bring my father to the doctors and won't be able to play.
My original plan was to just play my home games and work some extra shifts to try and save up for the New England Poker Classic.
I figure if I don't make enough money here, there's always a number of upcoming home games that I hope to do well in that will help increase my money.
Worst comes to worst, well, I'll probably only be able to afford one event at the NE Poker Classic. So I'll play the soonest event that I'm interested in (I think it was Omaha hi/lo 8 or better) and if I do well there I'll have the money I'd need for the other events. Always gotta have a contingency plan!

Well, posted my trip report on the 2+2 forums under the Brick & Mortar section.
Also, got a chance to play around with the Foxwoods Poker chips. I friggin' love them, it's too bad that they destroy them for security reasons when they move to a new chip (you'd think that someone could just buy up some chips and take them home, so not sure what the "security" problem is?) Hmmm.......maybe it could be people claiming "oh, I had taken these home with me and planned to use them again in the future, and now they're discontinued, I want my money back!"
Well, anyway, yeah, liked the Foxwoods chips even more than the buypokerchips.com Modern Clays. I think you guys said they were Paulsons chips, hope one day I can afford some of them puppies!

If you like the feel of the Modern Clays, try getting some Nevada Jacks Samples. They are HANDS DOWN BETTER in every way.
Modern clays are also notorious for off center inlays. Try Nevada Jacks, you will like them more!
If you like the 3 edgespot look, go with their Martini Clubs.
I think the BPC mold is lame, and so is thier inlays. Not only that but their quality is off.
I think NJ orders in smaller quantities from Blue chip so the quality is much much better. (Some chips are still off however.)
Hope that helps.

A friend of mine just got ChipCos, and I was pretty unimpressed with the texture used on the surface. The chips do not stack well at all. I just got a sample set of the current James Bond ones, and I would definitely wait for the Paulsons if you want them. The design on the current ones are great, but I think they are poorly manufactured based on the ones I got. I have the Nevada Jacks "Dead Man" chips. They are ceramic (composite), but the texture is much rougher than the ChipCo texture. All the edgespots are the same on each color, though. However, they make a "Desert Sands" model now that is the exact same chip but has a more casino look to it, with different colored edgespots. They sell them at 5stardeal.com for pretty cheap.

BUt when it really comes down to it, its what the casinos use.
This is the reason that TRKINGs even though a great chip, has no real market. This I think is the case with NJ composits (Very Nice chips) but its just not the same because it takes away from that casino feeling
