Acceptable losses?

Posted Wed Dec 29, 2004 5:46 pm GMT by Deadhands
OK so i started playing about little over a month ago. Im playing mainly on .25-.50 limit tables, and a few 5+1 ST tournaments too.

So far im down about 80 bucks...My peak was at 200 and my lowest before a recovery was about 3 dollars when i managed to scramble back up to 50.

Now i only got a handul of dollars and before im through toniht ill prolly have them spent aswell.

Is this an acceptable loss for a new player or am i way out of control?

as a followup to the above, i did loose my last bucks, not very suprisingly though. But 80 bucks loss is enough for me this month.

Im gonna wait for a month, do some more playmoney games (i know they wont give me any knowledge but at least it keeps me counting odds and such) and then, when i feel ready, ill deposit some 100bucks or so and begin playing much more carefully.
My aim will be to make it last at least 2 months, no matter if its a steady downhill or a non-win/non-loss month. And who knows, i may even win my losses back (though i highly doubt it).

$80 in your first month is reasonable i would say.
Of course it all depends what you can afford to lose.
I think you're doing the right thing tho now you have made your first forray and lost your initial deposit.
Take some time, do some reading, brush up on your game, replan your strategy and then get back in the game with a better idea of what you're doing ;o)

Nice to know im not totally off then =)

My intentions was never to win anything as i am fully aware that most players never do earn more then they lose...And those that DO earn money, will probably have spent a long time loosing at first.

What has annoyed me though is how my bankroll could skyrocket one night only to fall greatly the other night. I had my 80 bankroll up to 200 over one night. And the night after that i drove it down to 40. (This was a mistake from my part, i should have quit early that night. A mistake i will not do again)

I definitly have some reading to do and must also look back at the past weeks and see if i can see any big problems with my playstyle. I also have to deal with these odds calculations, something i havent bothered very much with so far.

But as long as i can keep my losses to a minimum, im happy. Ive found a new hobby and i enjoy playing both online and reallife holdem alot.

If you want to look on it as a hobby, a way to pass time doing something you enjoy then you can decide if $80 is acceptable or not.
You'd probably spend more a month smoking Laughing

I'd say for the .25/.50 table this looks quite a lot. To me, this looks like you are playing too many hands...the fastest way to losing a lot of money. Smile

I started playing poker online about 2 months ago.

I lost my first 100 bucks razther quickly, and was quite dejected as I could never seem to win (was playing ring games and the occasional $5 MTT). Then, I took one last stab at it, and deposited 25 bucks, and started playing SNG's.

I started with $2, 20 person SNG's ($16 to first place) and then eventually moved to 8$, 20 person SNG's.

In the last month I went from $25 to $250.

Needless to say I am quite happy that I found my niche....I seem to be a much better NL holdem player then a limit ring game player.

I just gotta start placing higher in those $5-$10 MTT and I'll be set Smile

Keep it up!

well i began with $5 stt a few weeks ago...deposited 25 just to test...

At the moment im at $150 and have withdrawn $50 so its going well for me aswell...I have moved up to $10 stt and occcationally a $5 mtt (though i have still to win one of those)

I too have found that i do much better in tournament play then in ring games. Seeing the bankroll grow, slow but steady, makes the game all so much more fun 8)
