I got into an argument the other day about who would be the big and small blind when its heads up. Ive always thought that dealer was the small blind, and the action is to him first before the flop. And then after the flop it goes to the other person. This kid was saying the dealer was the big blind and his reasoning was that it goes dealer, small, big, in every other instance so why not when its heads up. If someone can tell me the truth about this I'd appreciate it. thanks

You have it right. The dealer is the SB and first to act pre-flop. The reasoning for this is that it gives the dealer the chance to act first on one of the rounds of betting.

I thought the dealer was the button...That's why it's called the dealer button after all. So the SB would then be the person directly after the button and the dealer acts last.

Yes the dealer is the button but when heads up he is the SB. That's how all the televised tourneys go and all the tourneys I've played locally too.
