If I can get my soon to be hungover self out of bed, I plan on spending the day at Canterbury. I can think of few better ways to start the year than poker and college football on 20 TVs.

I'm headed to Harrah's, East Chicago. It's been a great week of poker, and even with a disasterous 55-minute cameo appearence at the 20/40 tables (I'll spare you the details that cost me over $500--a couple rounds, what the heck? How bad can I get hurt if I play tight and smart?) I'm still in a three figure houly rate.

Tonight should be quite rewarding, I am told by the staff. I let everyone else party on New Year's. I use to go out for a light supper and rent a movie with my wife. Tonight I'll tuck her in early and take advantage of a lucrative opportunity--"Sorry hon, I've got to work."

Well 2004 ended with my first casino poker experience. And very valuable it was too. Cheap £10 rebuy tourney at the local casino in my hometown. My first casino! Actually a relatively swish place. Played for 2 hours and never needed to rebuy. At the freezeout I had quadrupled my buyin and was comfortable. Got used to the shuffling, cutting and betting in a live game (first live game ever!). Then it happened. I went all in on AKs. I shouldn't have. I don't know why I did it. Two others in the pot. AA and QQ turn over. I was dead in the water. QQ spiked a third on the turn but I was already saying my goodbyes.

I've played the same hand online and once or twice got lucky. Perhaps I got lucky more than my share and I failed to learn that IT"S A F*CKING DRAWING HAND NOT AN ALL IN HAND! Heheheheh... I'm still kicking myself but it's made me learn once and for all. A shame because I was just settling into the zone. I think 2005 will see the rise of regular live games and the inauguration of the Idaho home game (once I've built the table and the chips have arrived).

Have fun everyone.

BTW, Sklansky, in his tournament hold'em book recommends all-in on AK.

I don't believe in letting my tourney hopes ride on AK.
You can't just say oh I have AK, I'm all in.

Situation, stack size and players definately play a part in that decision.

To risk your stack on one hand of hit or miss to me is rediculous. Short stacked, taking a last stab at a half decent pot to get back in teh game definately that is an all in hand. But I've folded AK when someone put me all in before the flop. Its too much of a gamble to let my money ride on a draw hand.

I just find it easier to lay down good hands now when someone calls me all in. If I have AA, KK I'm in, but anything less then that takes a moment of thinking. And A lot of the time I'll fold. I think its a sign I'm becoming a better player. I've just been beat too many tiems holding AK all in to continue it. I always get outdrawn.

I've just realized that if your not hard up for chips and its not an urgent situation its unnescessary to push all in and risk it. Other good hands will come along. its not a do or die situation.

Brighton is my hometown... Exeter is where I live these days.

I'm amazed that Sklansky reccommends all in on AK. Against any pair you are a medium shot. Against AA you are dead in the water. I got out a pack of cards at home and layed out AA QQ and AK and drew 5 cards. I didn't win one out of 20 attempts.

I called an all in bet twice last night with AKs, both times against a pair of nines. Lost em both, but I had the bet covered easily and went on to crush both players later in the night. I'll call the bet in heads up most times, but only suited AK. I would never push my stack in without QQ or higher.
