I have just realised i do not know how to work out the odds of one hand over another preflop?
I assume it is to do with potential outs, but i noticed on another thread; AK is 3-1 favorite over AQ. I assume this would be because AK would win should no cards pair, but i don't understand where these figures come from, could someone give me some pointers please?
Did you know that participating in a poker forum can help you improve your own game? Be it by sharing experiences or simply asking for help, participation in a forum helps you focus and keep 'on topic' which will help you improve your game. You can learn from other players feedback and from their experiences. Why the THP poker forums? We offer one of the best managed texas holdem poker forums available, and the community within is far more friendly than those typicaly found on other sites. We've made a 'lurkers edition' of the poker forum available here on Holdem Poker Online, but we encourage all visitors to register and join in on the conversations on TexasHoldem-Poker.com

What the program I use does is it takes the two hands you enter and plays out a couple million hands and sees which one wins more often, then it gives you the estimate of one hands chance of winning over another.

its not really about potential outs pre flop...(it can be of course in theory but for practical purposes i wouldnt think in terms of "potential outs" till i saw a flop imo)
true AK would win should no cards pair but it will also win if cards do pair or a set comes up...
more importantly, AK dominates AQ in that the only thing that can really help AQ is a queen(as long as its not w/a King) or a long shot flush/straight draw...besides that it will probably lose or at best tie when two pair/full house hit which is another long shot...
