table help

Posted Sun Jan 02, 2005 5:47 am GMT by txfalconer
Hey guys. first timer here with a question. I'm looking to get a small game going at my house (6-7 people). I don't have a lot of room, so I was thinking of getting this table top.
http://www.shopwsop.com/productdetails.aspx?id=100053983

Or this table.

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=3342147&cat=162709&type=1&dept=4171&path=0%3A4171%3A4191%3A162709

Has anybody used either of these or have any recommendations?

Thanks!

I have somethin like the first one which is fine but sometimes gets crowded when trying to place 7. The second table looks pretty good for the money. I would prob try to go for that.

The first one , I can easily fit my family of 6 when we play Texas Hold em. The second one I could barely fit me and 4 friends when we went to Wal-mart to check it out.

my advice would be make your own. i made mine using pcpotato's directions and maui poker's rail. I used expensive foam, mali billard cloth, and two cast iron restaurant table bases and it cost me $320.It was a fun project and it turned out better than i expected.
You could cut costs and make a good table for 9-10 ppl using a banquet table
for the price of the walmart table.

i can EASILY get 6 around my walmart table. 8 was crowded, but not that bad. if you need to make room for more on your table, get some dinner trays and set them between players for drinks, snacks, etc..

the other thing to keep in mind here is that the one from walmart is a stand alone..you don't need to take up your existing table to use it...so if you have more then 8 players, you can use your dinner table and still have two games going.

Unfortunatly I live in a Cape Cod and there just isn't enough room for an 8' table here, not unless I want to remove my GF's dining room set or my HDTV. So I'm going to have to settle for something smaller and easily put away. I plan on building my own as soon as we get a bigger house.

From my personal experience those folding octagon tables are utter and complete crap. It's better to just play on a regular table. Cheaper tool

Well one of the benefits of making your own table is that you can make it however you want. Can't fit and 8' table? Make a 6' table. Can't fit an oval table? Make a round table or an octagon. Just make whatever fits in your house.

Mine is the best of both worlds. It's an octaganol oval. It's alittle shorter than 8' making it easier to deal from the ends. But it is a tad wider than 4' so I can still fit 10 comfortably.

Actually, I didn't. I used a full width of plywood and let the rail hang over the edge instead of ripping an inch or so off for the under-rail bumper. The only problem was that the rail is 52" wide so I could not cut it out of one piece. I had to piece it together and then piece together another layer to make it one piece. Get it? It was alittle more work but it turned out great and this way I was able to easily wrap it with vinyl, straight pieces only. I like it.

Actually the problem is more one of storage. Unfortunatly there's not a lot of that here (no garage, really small stairway to the basement) that's why I was looking at the table top or folding table. I don't mind building it myself. Since there seems to be conflicting opinions on the 2 I listed, is there a decent site for a build your own round or octogon that stores easily? (No way I could fit an 8' and probably not even a 6')

Thanks

I think if you just buy some folding table legs then it will store pretty easy, do you need to be able to fold the table surface also? I don't know any plans for that, but if you draw up plans yourself you should be able to make it work methinks.

If this tells you anything, I was surprised on how poor quality the WPT table is at Wal-Mart. I would recommend a standard square folding card table before that piece of junk.

Folding table tops vary in quality by quite a bit...I'd guess the WPT one is near the bottom of the list, due to its price and the poor quality of WPT stuff. You get what you pay for.

i'm really surprised with the comment on the WPT table from walmart. the only thing that sucks about it is the lack of padding under the playing surface, which can be fixed quickly. just remove a few screws from the rail to remove it, pull up the 'felt', spray glue your 1/4" HD foam to the top and either put the 'felt' back on or replace it with speed cloth/billiard felt.

the biggest task when making your own table is finishing the rail and figuring out how to support the damn thing. there are a ton of tutorials out there that are very helpful, but for under $100 you can get a table w/rail and folding legs, add padding and new felt. plus you can put in cup holders pretty as well. i give it two thumbs up for the price and the ability to customize it EASILY

I hadn't thought of it that way...it has some value as a fixer-upper, though IMHO, once you're done fixing it, you're left with a slightly unsturdy, slightly too small poker table with a nice padded felt playing surface.

Without fixing it, the table is IMHO unplayable, and inferior to, say, a standard folding card table.

As I said, this is merely my opinion...I personally wouldn't purchase the table even as a fixer-upper.

Briefly:

Get two pieces of quarter sheet plywood (24"x48") and piano hinge them together to make a square. Do the math, etc. and cut the corners off to make a nice octagon. Get some 1/2" x 3/4" shoe molding and cut and mitre to size and glue/nail/screw to the top of the octagon, around the edges (make a lip so to say.)

Now get some nice 1/2" padding and material and cut to fit to the inside the lip dimensions. Basically, make a big mouse pad. Perhaps some good auto headliner would work here, as it already has material on one side and comes in many colors.

Walah, portable poker table.

This is just an idea I've been kicking around, although I did actually make the wood portion of the above, I use it to place my folding octocan table in, because it needed the support.

Alternatively, I made a nice 10 person table TOP by using 4 quarter sheets and dowel joining them together and rounding off the end pieces. I place this on top of a banquet table, cover with padding and material, pull tight and clamp underneath to the table. Makes a great table and breaks down to 24x48" pieces. I hope to detail this process with photos sometime soon over at scottkeen site. Sorry, no rails on these.

Jason

Check out this guys site (blog) as well for a portable racetrack table. Lacks details (he's still working on some of the kinks). But it's a great idea.
