I've been lurking here for a few days but this is my first post. Its nice when you find a place with so many well informed posters.
I'm upgrading from a cheap set of suited 11.5 gram chips. I have about a $300 budget for about 400-500 chips.
Some question on the the pokerchips.com $.50 chips. Are the centers recessed at all? I would want to put custom vinyl lables on afterward but dont want to pay the .50 a chip extra that they charge. This would really the only way I could do customs with a "nice" set of chips. I assuming without a recessed center that the labels would catch during chip stacking/shuffling. Also, will they let you choose custom colors at that price, or are their fixed combos?
P.S. Also got samples at the Fan of Cards( nice graphic but seems pretty low quality chip) NJ Dead Man, NJ Desert Sands( look good, but not great to me) and blue chips bond. I was also considering the Mardi Gras, but don't like how the edge sports dont match up on ceramics on that they worsen with time.(especially with my druken friends )
Any info is greatly appreciated.

The Roman Mold and Circle/Square chips are not recessed. I've seen samples of both. When they make the inserted chips, the inserts are part of the chip and can't be removed without damaging the chip. You're probably right about labels catching on non-recessed center chips.

Thanks for the reply, thats definitely disapointing. The next option would be the nextgens, but I definitely feel like their a step back.
No ones by any chance tried putting labels on these or found chips similar in quality and price that have a recessed center. The grad student budget doesn't go over @ $300
It seems like peope like the poker chip company's chips but their colors look a little bland to me.

So your budget is $.60/chip for 500. At TRKing you can get chips for $.55/chip with denomination on one side and initials on another. They don't have edgespots but they are clay. For $360 you can get edge spots if you only do 400 chips.

I checked those out but I really wanted chips with edge spots.
Also the more expensive blank chips with edge spots appears to be in the same boat as the pokerchips.com chips. Plus its definitely more than I wanted to spend. (Would be about 400 w/the cost of labels.)
Anyone know of any decent blanks with a recessed center at the .50-.60 that has already been mentioned?

Blue Chip makes a clay chip with a 1.2 inch recessed area that you can put a label on. I think they go for about 50 cents a chip, but no edge spots. It's the same chip that they use for their home fantasy chips, 8.3gr 39mm, 3.2mm thick. 5stardeal has a small quantity in white and red only that they're closing out. Came out to 36 cents with the 25% off coupon. If you want edge spots and want to come in at under 50 cents a chip, you should probably stick with the China imports. The Nexgens would be a good choice, and you can get the chips from 5star for under .20 each right now with their 25% off promo. Their shipping/handling charges are high for small orders, so try and get everything in one order if you hit their maximum 19.95 shipping charge. It'll keep the cost per chip down.

I saw those from 5stardeal. It's a shame they only have the white and red(too bland a set.)
i'll probably end up with the nexgens, but it would be nice if there was more of a middle market. I'd be willing to go up to .65 a chip if anyone has any other suggestions.
Going to send an e-mail to pokerchips.com tommorrow to see if maybe they would sell a recessed center chip blank at this price, though I'm not too optimistic
