Betting guidelines

Is there a good rule of thumb for calling or placing a bet once you have determined your hand is worthy of a bet? Preflop, Flop, turn & river? This has been bothering me for some time now and I was wondering if I was betting correctly. I currently use a 3-4 times the big blind if I have a good hand and work from there. Is this too agressive or too passive?

Thank you in advance.

this is no limit holdem' if you're going to bet then BET.. i find for a preflop raise at least 3x the big blind is enough.. of course if you're finding people aren't respecting that size a raise (following with trash) then you can up it to 4x or 5x and so on.. until they get the idea... then when you bet a standard bet should be the amount thats in the pot.. for example blinds are 1$ and 2$ you raise to 6$ (2$x3) and get two callers.. thats about 18$ now if you've decided you're in this you bet out 18$... you'll put a decision on the other players.. is their hand worth chasing with?.. if so they'll call or raise.. and then you have a good idea of what they have.. and you continue accordingly... and that way you'll just be gouging any loose players that want to call you with trash.. cause it'll miss more often that hit they'll fold and lose that $6 more often than they'll get a hand..
