tipping...

Posted Mon Dec 15, 2003 12:47 pm GMT by BrianGre
speaking of tipping... I have not had the pleasure of playing in a real casino yet, but when you guys are referring to tipping, are there guidelines?

I assume you are talking about tipping the dealer... on winning hands? after you're done?

thanks
Brian

I usually tip $.50 up to $20, $1 to $70 or so and maybe $2-3 for pots up to $150-175

Dealers frequently rotate-so try to tip per pot. If you have a great run during one dealers, maybe toss them an extra $5 or so when they are being rotated out.

My GAWD! I'd go broke tipping like that! You're making us all look bad. Cut that shit out! Fifty cent tips. Period. Hand over $300 and you can go ahead and tip a buck, but it better be a chick and she better be hot!

i tip a buck or two bucks for ever one of the pots i win

and a buck to the waitriest when she brings me my strawbarry milkshake

i'll agree with Groton on this one. I play $3-6 and $4-8 Hold 'Em in Seattle, and i've settled on a $1 tip for most pots-$2 bucks if it's an above average size, and $3 if it's huge.
i guess that works out the same way most rooms rake the pots up here-$1 to start, and another dollar as the pot gets larger up to $3.

That is one thing I have never understood about casinos, when you win it is supposed to be etiquette to tip but what about all those other times I go home broke? I don't see the casino giving me any comps, unless you are one of the big dawgs....BTW I do tip if I win because I am not a cheapskate but just something that never seems to make sense...LAter

granted, it might not be the best source of information, but i've seen NUMEROUS shows on the travel chanel about vegas... not sure if it applies only there or elsewhere as well... but just for everyones fyi... the dealer your tipping isn't actually keeping the tip. the casinos there run standard tip pools and everyone shares the earnings at the end of the day (or month perhaps... some places do it that way and just put it on the paychecks).

anyway... just thought i should let yall know in case you decide to tip that pretty blond dealer a 20 spot.

At the casino where I play(Indian casino), the poker dealers keep their own tips. When they do a shift/break change or rotate tables, the dealers carry their own drop jar. However, the other table games (blackjack, etc.) do split their tips. I think each place may have their own rules about that. As for tipping, I usually tip $1 or $2, little more depending on the size of the pot and what level is.

Sooner or later we're going to have a dealer in here and he/she's going to hate me. But you guys are tipping WAY too much.

Fifty cents. You're making it tougher on the rest of us.

Is this a drink I know nothing about or do you really sit and play while sipping a big strawberry milkshake? Does it come with a cherry on top? :)

and sickitty, what are you, Quentin Tarentino? Who doesn't tip? s'barbaric, man :)

Well my daughter worked as a waitress this summer...I overtipped her all the time and you would too, if you saw her.

Nonetheless...I'm in the casino to make money. Tipping is overhead. I'd walk out with $12 or $15 less per session if I tipped $1 instead of $.50. I play 12x a month...let's see...tipping at your pace would cost me between $50-$70/month or $600-$840/year. That's just the difference between tipping a half vs. a dollar. Start tipping 2 or 3 dollars and look what happens. 12 sessions/month, 24-30 tips/session x $3: your giving away $750 to $1000/month. Why work your ass off and give it all back????

HELL! You can hire your own personal valet for that kind of scratch. (Yeah, I know, it's hard to sneak them in from the far East, but still....)

Hi, newbie here. I hope it's OK to jump right in.

Tipping is a heated topic sometimes. I'm an over-tipper, in a restaurant. I thought that part of the reason for tipping was that it gave the individual providing the service an incentive to 'do their job well'. If they are splitting tips, that incentive is greatly diminished isn't it? In any case, shouldn't the tip be based upon the quality of service? Some dealers are a pleasure to be at the same table with while others...not so much.

Team tipping is based on military thought . . . the idea is that if you get the members of the team to conform and achieve you don't have to manage indivduals as much . . . your ambitious people ride your slacker's butts for you.

And you know what's a good drink? (on the milkshake) - - a vanilla malt with a little (or a lot, but I'm a bit boy) Kahlua in it. . . I call it the Siberian. Don't add the vodka. . . .works like antifreeze.

I have friends who are dealers and come on, a tip of .50 is a little small. Mindgame, I know you were talking about how much you would lose per year and that is a good point, but have you thought how much you lose per year to the "rake?" A dollar will not kill you, in fact it should just seem to you as another part of a rake. These guys don't get paid minimum wage, they get paid by your tips. If you rake a $50 pot what is the big deal of throwing a dollar check to the dealer?

Anyway... I was at the casino when quads beat Aces full of Jacks and the "BAD BEAT JACKPOT" was awarded for $75,000 (50% to loser, 25% to winner, and 25% to rest of table) . The dealer was tipped $6,000.

Posted Mon Feb 23, 2004 12:14 pm GMT by mindgame
Hey, I plead guilty. I am NOT a big tipper in the casino. I let the high rollers do that.

But I DO know these dealers and I regard some of them as friends. I go out and have a smoke with them on the deck frequently, chat with them all the time when they're on break, and play with them when they go to the boat next door so that they can sit at the opposite side of the poker table. We swap poker advice and war stories and I honestly don't believe there is any resentment because I'm one of the (army of) .50 tippers. They know why I'm there and I think they respect that. By the way, I will concede that when THEY play they usually tip $1.

Now don't get me started on the F*ing rake, please!

Posted Tue Feb 24, 2004 12:35 pm GMT by BeerWench13
Wow! Thanks for the helpful advice, everyone. I'm heading to a casino next week and, apparently, when I was in Vegas I was really over-tipping. Looks like I may save a little money.

Posted Tue Feb 24, 2004 6:54 pm GMT by JohnnyCache
Personally, I don't think you can overtip . . . tipping comes back to you in the end. I have a waiter at a local steakhouse who will "take care" of my entire drink tab because I overtipped him everytime I came in for about six months . . . that 20, 30 bucks tip sometimes saves me upwards of $100. I've more then made my money back off the kid.

JohnnyCache wrote:

I would agree with you in the business of restaurant/bar servers, but in the business of dealers? The only thing (presumably) that they have control over is attitude. They cannot give you good cards just because you tip them very well... Smile

(BTW, my wife has accused me of over-tipping the dealers at BlackJack so I'm guilty)...

Posted Wed Feb 25, 2004 11:14 am GMT by JohnnyCache
They can still hook you up in some ways. . .for example, they prob. know the town and the casino inside and out, and could find about anything you were looking for for you. . . and it's worth it to me to just have a good reputation . . . and I think a big tip on a great/lucky hand is just good karma. Yeah, it eats profit, but it's that decision to be a pure capitalist or to give back to the community. . . it's a philosphy in general.

Posted Wed Feb 25, 2004 12:32 pm GMT by golddog
Frequency probably plays a part, as well.

I play in Vegas maybe three times a year, and don't go much around here. So, even if I have a super-hot visit, at $1/win, I'm tipping maybe $50 extra/year (in opposition to $.50/hand).

In the overall scheme of things, $50/year is not significant.

But I can certainly understand why people that go regularly see this as a pretty big hit. $20 extra/week adds up pretty quickly.

Well this thread could go forever. I’ll never see eye to eye with Mr. Cache because we define tips as totally different things. For me, it’s paying the vig. . .just something that makes the rake worse. He sees it as a contribution to the larger community--and one that frequently pays for itself--certainly, generosity is like that. Some guys see it as a way of grandstanding—poker showmanship. Nobody’s necessarily right or wrong—but I can’t get to where you are from where I am. I’m there to work, same as the dealer. I give him what I feel is his due—no more. I get knee surgery, I don’t overpay the doctor, either, if I like how it came out.

BUT there are intangible advantages at the table—as with your drink tab—and I’m giving those up. I won’t go into them, but they are there. And I’ve heard stories, too. This happened in Vegas to a good friend. He was playing at the Flamingo one morning before breakfast—just flown in on a redeye—and he was the only player tipping for about an hour and a half. The dealers keep their tips there and one guy was making a point to thank him loudly as a hint to the other players. My friend even suggested to people that they ought to be taking care of the dealer, but they ignored him. Anyway, the dealer gives him an exasperated look…then raised his eyebrows at him and winked. It was 7-card stud. On the ensuing hand my friend sees a king up and finds two in the pocket. He shoots a look to the dealer, who was staring right at him, smiling broadly.

I agree 100% with mindgame here.

I'm a university student, finishing my masters. For my masters, I'm doing research for a company. I don't get tipped.

I used to sell suits at Moores (Men's Wearhouse in the US, i believe) and I never got tipped (except for once, I thought it was hilarious).

I used to work in a movie theatre as a manager, never got tipped.

If nobody tips me, why would I tip others.

However, it always seems that we have to tip waiters/waitresses. It's a process that people created and now, it's a must in the society we live in. They make you feel cheap if you don't tip. If it's to show the waiter/waitress that "they did their job well", now that everybody does it, if you don't tip it makes you look bad... I don't know...

Anyway, I always tip at the casinos. First hand I ever played in a poker room, I won a $300-$350 pot, and of course, I didn't tip the dealer. The next few hands, the winners always tipped the dealer. So I quickly understood that I don't really have to tip the dealer, but since everybody does it, why not... Now I tip maybe a buck or two for regular pots, maybe $5 for big pots. At blackjack, I give them my $2.50 chips when I hit blackjack. That makes me look good since I never see BJ dealers getting tipped alot.

Question, how can tipping can get you broke if you only tip when you win. Only once I tipped for "good luck", I'll never do that again. It felt too ackward. Even though I don't see the reason for tipping besides to look good/nice, I don't see how it can get someone broke.

Posted Mon Mar 22, 2004 8:42 pm GMT by thepheonix
To say something about tipping waiters and waitresses is....
The resturant can afford to keep prices relativly lower if they only pay their servers $2.13 which is the lowest you can pay a waiter. His tips are supposed to make up the rest of his wage. The public pays their wage so the resturant can keep the prices lower. So if you didn't have to tip your server, and the resturant had to pay them higher wage, chances are the menu prices would be 15% larger.

The same goes for casino dealers. Their wage is the tips. For casinos to make the same amount of profit and pay their workers they would raise prices on other things or charge for alcholic beverages. Do you see what I am saying?

Posted Mon Mar 22, 2004 10:46 pm GMT by Saso8910
I have read most of the replies -- you all must be rich! In a casino, the only dealers who make consistant money are Poker dealers! I usually play 10/20 hold'em- sometimes 5/10, if I'm waiting for a table, and regardless of what limit I'm playing I always tip a 50cent coin! Lets face it- the dealer had absolutely nothing to do with you winning or loosing! Do you tip blackjack dealers? Hell Na! And that's less than a 2% house advantage game! (if you do tip on blackjack - an even money game, with an occassional 2 to 3 payout- you are very stupid!)

Let's Break It Down.... figure the very-very modest calculation of 30 hands of poker dealt per hour. If the dealer is tipped out .50cents for ever hand in an hour, that equals $15.50 per hour. Now, we all know that there are those idiots who tip 2 or 3 bucks because they caught a river boat or flush, so some of these dealers can easily make 20+ bucks an hour in tips (of course they split it amongst the other dealers at the end of the shift). Now-- let's say you sit down at a 3/6 hold'em game and you buy in for 100. If you're one of these 1 dollar tippers and you have won 6 hands in the past hour. Why would you give up 6% of your inital investment? Yeah, you may be winning- but how much? and remember, at any time you can get a bad beat that brings you negative- you would then be asking yourself "why did I tip so much?" See what I'm saying? For me it defies my money management efforts to tip out with my winnings.

What I do is buy a $10 roll of half dollar coins at the cashier and then buy-in at the poker room. I only tip from my coins and always know where I'm at in my play/money. I did once play at a casino where I asked the dealer to chop a $1 chip, so I could tip him-- he told me that they didn't do that there and laughed. I didn't give a shit! I said, "Fine- then I'll tip you a full dollar when I win my next hand" I got a very interesting look.

The only people I tip in a place that has the edge on me- before I walk in the door- are the security/slot payout reps. Whenever I've won a jackpot over 1k, I tip the person who puts that cash in my hand! It's the 400 to 1 odds that I tip out on. I have no problem tipping $20 to a slot rep who's handing me 3k! Now I can throw a little money around! -SASO

Posted Tue Mar 23, 2004 12:26 am GMT by JohnnyCache
I only tip big in a game when I have a good hand, the rest of the time I do the baseline thing. . .

And I will leave one decent tip when I get up and leave a black jack table... but not while I play

Posted Tue Mar 23, 2004 12:42 am GMT by General Sal
Wow, Saso, thanks for lowering my overall wages by putting statements like that in print. LOL

The funny thing is that you could tell 10 people to not gamble. They'll lose in the long run. Instead, they should invest in the stock market. What'll happen? Maybe, 3 of those people will do the right thing with their money. That fifty bucks a month is better played in investments in the market than on blackjack.

As far as consistent money for poker dealers... I'm not sure what you meant by that statement. I can say that most poker dealers keep their own tips. It's not pooled like it is for blackjack and craps dealers. Thus, they don't have to declare their tips like us bj dealers. Advantage: poker dealers. Double so for the cute ones.

As far as tipping the poker dealers... they won't mind getting only 50 cents on the small pots of twenty dollars. At the 2/4 tables, they're making a killing! But on the 10/20 tables? It's a litle more fair... but it does look like you're a cheapskate. And, if you're a jerk at the table, in addition to being perceived as frugal, well you're just a cheap b*****d to the players at the table. They will point that out if their mood suits it.

I always tip at blackjack
Hit a huge double down win
Take a One doller chip or two and place them infront of mychips next hand.

I never got a tip in securty we could not accept them.

iv found if u tip good at the Casino or Eatery/Bar
the next time u go they remeber your tips and u get better faster service

Posted Tue Mar 23, 2004 4:53 pm GMT by BigSuitedSlick
Frankly, I tip the same way at a holdem table as I would a restaurant. If the dealer does their job, and doesn't screw up, I will tip 1 dollar on any pot above the blinds, if they are poor dealers, I will tip 1 dollar for huge pots on principle, but nothing for smaller- mid sized pots. To me a bad dealer is someone who mis deals, is unfriendly/unwelcoming, or just seems like he or she is waiting for their shift to end.

Posted Tue Mar 23, 2004 5:01 pm GMT by mindgame
Okay, for the record I'm a cheap bastard and I'm okay with that.

But the last time I played I tipped my favorite dealer (an incredibly beautiful little Serbian girl) five bucks. I have no idea what the hell I was thinking. Anyway, after that EVERYONE starts tipping her 3, 4, five bucks. Oh my god, was she happy with ME! I have smiles coming my way now for life.

(That's all, just smiles. I'm married and I'm staying that way!)

I saw a guy throwing a $25 chip at the dealer, maybe a couple of times, at a 5-10 table. Now, THAT'S crazy! I prefer giving my $2.50 chip to the BJ dealer named Pinky than losing it at Roulette. Laughing

Oh, and BTW, if you sit at a BJ table and the dealer's name is Pinky, switch table... bad experience... Laughing

It's like Mindgame said once before, there's your money and there's your poker money. These are treated as two accounts. But I'm sure she was there with you so even if she wasn't watching, there's no way you could hold back telling her you just picked up a $1200 pot. I hope it was spent on something you both use. my bigest tip was 250
playing Blackjack at Barona in San Diego
they use to run specal bonus's if u got difrent hands

well if u got 5 Bj's in a Role it ended up being 1199.
Well I got a role and hit five ina role after your 3rd one thay tried to cool u by giving u an Extra fifty and thay call the floor over and all that and thay give u the 50
then the 4th its 250
and the fifth its 1199.

well so When i hit the last one I just gave the dealer back the money from the 4th BJ and pocketed the rest and went home
eneded up that night 2 or 3 Grand
