Question about Chipco wear |
|
Posted Mon Jan 10, 2005 5:04 pm GMT by Double Eagle
I was just in Tunica at the Goldstrike for the World Poker Open. Their chips appeared to me to be Chipco's. The chips used for cash games in the poker room were very worn around the edges. The red chips had worn to the point where there was a white ring completely arournd the edges of the chips on both sides.
Is this normal for Chipco's? Would Chipco's used in home games show similar wear after a period of time? I have been contemplating a Chipco purchase but this has given me second thoughts.

Keep in mind that those chips are used 24 hours a day by thousands of people. In a normal home game, those same Chipcos will last a lifetime.

I thought Chipco chips were made with the white ring around the edge to begin with so that it isn't as apparent when the wear started to show a white ring. But just to add to what you saw, I've seen Paul-Son chips in local card rooms that have been worn down so much that the top hat and cane were barely visible through the years of use. You probably wouldn't put that kind of wear on a set of home chips unless you've used them every day for a generation or two. I've had a set of Paul-Son chips from the 70's that have had a lot of use and they just have a little rounding on the edge of the chip.

I'm sure the chips you saw were well worn. However Chipco does design the chips with an outer ring that's white and a recessed center (very very slight) to protect the face from wear.
I haven't seen custom Chipcos that are very old so I can't attest to their wearability. From what I've read though I doubt this is an issue in home use... it didn't keep me from getting a custom set recently
Who has the oldest most used custom Chipcos? Post a pic if you can.

Here's a pic of my chips... you can see the "white rings"

those are some nice chips Fin, I just wish Chipco could get thier act together and line up those dang edgespots!
As for the wear, the dogtrack near my house that I play at sometimes has some serious wear and tear on the chip edges. If you wear them down like that in a home game, then you play way too much poker!(if that's possible)

VERY NICE CHIPS!
Chipcos will not wear this way with home games. However, when they chip, they stay that way. This is the main reason that I am not a fan of chipcos.
Chipcos will last homeplayers a LIFETIME!
BUt they get really NASTY in casinos though.

LOL... or your not playing it right
Thanks for the chip comment. Yeah, I was tempted to design them so the face didn't correspond to the edges so it wouldn't be as much of an issue but I liked the design & edge spots too much to change it. It doesn't bother me near as much as I thought it might. You'd think they could have used some of that money form the huge Sept. price increase to fix that!

I don't think I'd have had the patience to line up the edge spots in the stacks. Nice chips.

Every chip gets nasty in a casino. I can not think of a single time in a card room or casino, whether playing with Paulson, Bud Jones, ChipCo or God's own cheques that I have not wanted to wash my hands immidiately afterwords. And take a bath.
What in the hell is that slime that gets on the chips that seems part mucus, part black Hubba Bubba, and yet oily?

I got off of a Royal Caribbean cruise ship yesterday and the on board casino used Chipcos.
They were in perfect looking condition, at the start of the trip, and still looked great 7 days later, but who knows how long they were actually being used for, maybe it was the beginning of a new batch.

The WPO was a total ZOO. 1500 in Fridays $500 NLHE, 1200 in Sat. $500 LHE. Friday, the Fire Marshall came in and they kicked everyone out of the tourney room that was not playing. This was my third straight year but I will not go back. I signed up Sat. for a cash game in the Goldstrike poker room and it took seven hours to get in a game. I was planning to stay until Wed. but I flew back home on Sun.
My guess is this will slow down later in the week as the tourney buy-ins go up. Good luck!

I am a big fan of ChipCo...but you can wear them down probably little easier than most think. I kept a set of about 20 at the office for 6 months. Myself and my employees played with them often and within about 3-4 months, the chips had developed significant edge wear. No chips or dings...just the graphics wearing off. This occured on BOTH the white-ringed chips and full-bleed graphic chips. It also occured on ChipCo chips from 3 different vendors...so it's not vendor specific.
Now...if you use your ChipCo chips once every 2 weeks...I'm guessing you've got a good 5 or 6 years before you start noticing a lot of wear...but I definitely don't think that regular poker players should expect these chips to 'last a lifetime'. They WILL eventually show their age.
Not trying to put down ChipCo...it's a great product...but it's not invincible.
Cheers,
John

Hi John,
Any pics of the worn chips?
Also, are you still planning on adding pics of custom chips to your site?

I can take some and send your way if you like.
And, yes, I'm still going to add a custom section. It will be up within a couple of weeks.
Cheers,
John

Yes I'd like to see some wear pics... post them if you don't mind.
Let us know about the customs section... that'll be a great addition.
