New Casino game for Chicago!

Posted Fri Dec 19, 2003 1:49 pm GMT by mindgame
The Trump casino in Gary (about 45 min. from downtown Chicago) finally opened that poker room.

Good news! Rake stops at only $5. This forced Harrah's to drop their rake back to five. AND

THEY HAVE A $3-6 GAME!!!!!!!!

Heretofore any beginners had to get their feet wet playing $5-10 at Harrah's East Chicago. Pretty expensive introduction.

PLUS....Starbucks coffee! FREE to poker players.

Competition. How I love it. Now we just need some nice, loose, dumb gamblers to wander in from the nether precints of the casino and give poker a try. Come join me soon. The fish will be biting.

How many tables do they have? How long is the wait?

Wow, sounds good I'll have to check it out.

I've been out of town for a bit, but I have a little more info on that game at the Trump boat in Gary....

REALLY GOOD NEWS:

The rake is only 5%--half what it is anywhere near that I've found. It does go up to $5, but takes twice as long to get there.

NOT such good news:

They stopped the free Starbucks--we poker players, sober lot that we are, just drank too damned much of it. They didn't know what they'd gotten themselves into. Oh well, nothing lasts forever. I'm sure that rake will go up also, but for now it's the sweetest deal in town. One reason I'd rather play 10-20 than 5-10 is that the rake is effectively 3%-5% since the pots average well over $100. On those days when the players at the higher stakes tables are not much better than those at the lower stakes, it makes more sense to cut your overhead. Anyway, at a 5% rake that added attraction to the bigger tables disappears.

Hey mindgame do you know of any other low or lower limit holdem games or NL tournaments in the Chicago area? I'm in the NW suburbs and although I think I'm a pretty good player and do well online I've never played a real game in a casino. I want to try as I think I can do quite well but even $3/$6 is expensive for me.

I'm really used to playing $25 sit down with blinds of 10 cents and a quarter, but I really doubt I'd find that at a casino, so I'm trying to find like a $1/$2 game (the lower the better, at least to start out and get used to the ettiquete) or a NL tournament from like $10 to $30. That way I could play a little without much risk just to get the feel for it before moving to bigger games. I don't think it would be good for my image to sit down at a $5/$10 or higher game and ask basic newb questions Smile

$3-6 is as cheap as it gets anywhere on this side of Nevada, as far as I know--in a casino. Yeah, it sounds MORTALLY steep. But it's not as bad as you think. You can sit down with $150 and play tight and you'll likely do fine if you've got some game experience. But I mean REALLY tight--especially at first. You should be aiming at winning somewhere around two hand an hour. After you get comfortable shift gears and play a little looser on or just off the button. Mostly watch, listen, and pounce.

Other than that, try setting up some little tourneys with a $20 or $30 buy in--just you and 8 or 9 friends. That's what I did. It gave me the chance to see a couple hundred hands for a very reasonable amount of money.

You can play $2/$4 up here in MN. Check out some Indian Casinos in WI or riverboats in IA. If they have holdem in a lower population area than Chic, they will likely have smaller stakes.

One thing to note-$2/$4 games are mostly for beginners. Nice for learning how it works in a casino, but junk for play. It can be very frustrating babysitting other players that dont know what they are doing. When you can-step up, your play will improve.
