Looking for Heads up Advice

Posted Wed Jan 19, 2005 7:20 pm GMT by CardPlayer55
In a previous post, I stated that I needed help with a problem, but I didn't explain myself right; I will attempt to seek this advice again. I play poker with all of my friends. We are all around 15-18 years of age. The buy-in is ussually $5-$10. We play tournament style No-limit hold'em starting off with 50 chips. We give each chip the same value of 1. Ussually there is 5-10 players in a game. Most of the players are very loose. I can use my style to get me to the final three or two ussually. 2nd place only gets money back and third place gets nothing, so i must win. For some reason, i always end up at 2nd or 3rd. I get my money back; but I never seem to win. I am looking for any advice as to how to play against others heads-up or 1 on 1. Any advice offered is greatly appreciated and will hopefully be used to win me some money.

Thank you,

Cardplayer

There is no tried and true method for winning heads-up. If you continue to play the way you do normally, you will be at the mercy of the cards; if you get good ones, you win. You have to play very aggressively, a'la Gus Hansen - push hands you normally wouldn't; any ace, any king, any suited connector, etc. On the button, always raise with an ace or a king - NEVER let your opponent check to the flop and catch something with a crappy hand (which he is likely to hold). When you're the BB, raise even more if your opponent just limps in.

That's about all you can do.
