NJ Martini vs. BPC Moderns

Posted Wed Jan 19, 2005 7:36 pm GMT by Berggren
First of all I must inform you all that I am a complete newbie in the field of poker chips. My experience is limited to cheap 11,5 sets and chips of varying quality found at different blackjack tables. I was hoping to hear your opinion on the matter.

I picked up a 10 piece sample set of BPC modern clay chips and must say I'm not at all impressed. They strike me as too lightweight and with a feel that I would almost describe as if they are compressed woodchips. I was hoping for a heavier, softer/more rubberlike feel to the chip.

Unfortunately Nevada Jack wont ship orders outside US so I can't get hold of any samples from them.

Since it appears that BC manufactures both BPC's clays and NJ's dito I'm wondering if the Martinis are just the same as the Moderns? I really like the colours of the NJ clays, but should I look elsewhere? Are there any better alternatives?

Also, if anyone have a small stack of NJ Martini they could possibly sell to me I'd be grateful.

Hey,

I just wanted to let you know that if you aren't looking for a custom clay set and don't want to play huge fees for Paulson chips on ebay, Nevada Jacks are a safe purchase. I have a set of these and a sample of the BPC Moderns and there is a huge difference. The NJ's have been very impressive to date for me. Here is a link regarding reviews on several chips currently being sold:

I purchased the NJ's after reading this and a few other reviews. There are some Paulsons being sold finally for home sets, but I haven't received any yet to make a comparison. I am sure they are pretty much they same quality, it probably just depend if you like the colors and the inlay used.

Hope this helps!

Weight wise, they are going to be the same. Make sure you handle the chips A LOT prior to really judging them. Blue Chip chips need a fair amount of oil in them to really make them shine. The difference between a new chip and one you've been playing with in your sweaty hands for a day is remarkable. If you REALLY don't like the BPC's, I doubt that you'll be blown over my the NJ's. The upcoming Paulsons will be heavier for sure. I would wait a few weeks and get a sample of them prior to making your decision.

Cheers,
John

I like the NJ Martini Clubs, they get better with use. I also like the Nevada Jacks ("Nevada" mold) clays, they're almost identical to the Martinis. Just personal preference about the subtle differences in the mold, the edge spots, and the denominations. http://www.nevadajacks.net/clay_poker_chips.htm

The BPC Modern Clays also play well over time. I consider these a good option. Some people don't like the Laurel Wreath & Poker inlay design, though. http://www.buypokerchips.com/clay-poker-chips-2.htm#modc

Both the NJs and BPCs are Blue Chip chips. The quality of my chip samples is good, but with a few off-center inlays and random spots molded in.

Another excellent choice (and a little cheaper) are the ASM Horsehead chips from Kardwell. These look and feel great to me, and they wear very well. Again, some people don't like the Casino Pro crown inlay design, or the three single edge spots. http://www.kardwell.com/casino-pro-chips.htm

To me, all four of these are equally good. They all seem about the same weight (and same as Paulsons), but lighter than the 11.5g or 13g stuff out there. But you won't get a softer rubbery feel in clay chips. You've got to go to Bud Jones chips for their classic feel (or the All-In Chips which get bad reviews, but actually have a good feel as their strong point).

Thanks all three of you! Based on your advice I've decided to keep the Martinis on my list of chips to watch. If the new Paulson's really are not notably heavier (and the mold bug me) I will get some Martini's for cashgame purposes. Though I wonder if it's possible to relabel these with a good result? I'd really like to use the higher denom colours in this set but the 100/500 value just is not right.
