Labels on "Old Gen" 11.5g Chips

Posted Wed Jan 19, 2005 10:21 pm GMT by lwestatbus
Saw the threads and pics (great!) on labels on Next Gen chips. I went all in with the common 11.5g ABS chips and am happy with them but do want labels. 2 questions for those with experience:

1. My chips seem a little thick already--can only get 24 in a 25-chip tray row, both wood and acrylic. The center disk portion of the chip "seems" to be flush with the edge surface. Has anybody had trouble putting labels on these chips and either thickening them or causing the stacks to become unstable?

2. The 1" diameter on my chips extends over a groove between the center flat spot and the outer rim of the chip. One label maker indicated that the edges of the labels fold right down inside this groove. Seems like a lot of work with potential for a sloppy appearance. Has anybody had experience with putting labels on this groove? How did they turn out?

Thanks.

Larry

You should probably avoid labels on those chips for two reasons.
1. They add even more thickness to the chip since there isn't a sufficient recess in the center of the chip to accommodate a label.
2. The labels will be constantly rubbing against each other and will have a very worn appearance in a short time.

Additionally you have that groove that you mention.

There seem to be two schools with the Chinese imports, some are rather thick and will not fit into conventional holders like the casino chip racks (will only hold 19 to the stack). Others seem to have a bit more uniformity in size and will also consistently fit into racks (the ones from 5stardeal and their other business names seem to fit into this category except for the new Jackpot Casino chips which are so thin that you can fit 21-22 chips into a stack).

If you want labels, you'd probably be much off investing into one of three chip types. The Texas Hold'em chips, River Poker Tour Nexgens, or the Las Vegas Nexgens, they all have a 1 inch center that will hold a 1 inch label very nicely. If you want to go to a casino grade chip, the ones from Blue Chip have a 1.1 inch recessed center that will give you plenty of room for a one inch label, plus a little wiggle room so that you can goof a little or put the label off-center (depending upon your perspective Smile ).

Thanks to PocketRocket. I'd noticed the lack of a recess. Didn't think about the rubbing effect but did anticipate the increased thickness. This has been a problem because even without labels I can only get 24 chips into a rack advertised for 25--two different types of racks, wood and acrylic.

One vendor sent me a sample of about 12 labels. They just did not fit in the groove well. They hung over the middle of the groove. I could use a finger nail to fold them down into the groove as the vendor suggested but the appearance was very, very uneven. I also had trouble centering the labels, though I think that with more to practice on I'd have gotten better.

Bummer. The pictures various people have posted look pretty good. Another factor, my chips have very deep colors to them (one of the reasons I like them). I think that the labels look much better on the chips with duller collers--better contrast.

Still interested in other's experiences. Please post if you have info.

Thanks.

The River Poker Tour and the Las Vegas Nexgens are both the same chip, just different coloring and mold stamps. They both have the same recessed center. The Hold'em chip is an earlier plastic chip with a similarly recessed center. You can see examples of the Blue Chip chips at http://www.5stardeal.com/deals/10Expand.asp?ProductCode=10-7090, though they don't have many of them in inventory.

For chips with 1" recess you can use the 1" label. I would suggest getting the 3/4" label for chips with grooves in them.

Unless the center is sufficiently recessed the labels are still going to rub against each other. A couple of shops in my area blindly sell labels or offer labeled chips and they stick them on any chip (cheap paper labels too, not vinyl). Most of the time the label is actually above the surface of the chip and will eventually wear a way from label to label abrasion. The 3/4" labels will work if you're willing to accept a small area of chip bordering the label, but the center of the chip still has to be sufficiently recessed so that the chip does not rub against the label of an adjacent chip, especially when these labels are printed from a computer printer rather than an offset press since the toner or ink than transfer to an adjoining surface.

you're correct pocketrocket. That's why I only recommend chips with the same style as the nexgens (Recessed center). I tell people not to bother putting stickers on the other type of chips.
