This may sound like a dumb question, but since I only play online, are card protectors necessary? What do they protect?

Should I start affixing a sticky note to my monitor when I'm going to call? :D

In a real game it protects them from the dealer taking them on accident.
Or just a lucky charm.

They also protect your hand from other players. Last time I played live I mucked UTG before the BB saw his cards. We were on the end, so my cards touched his-they called the floor over and allowed him to play his hand since 3 of us could clearly identify the cards and he had still not looked at them.

I have also seen someone get pissed off when the 3rd or 4th suited card hit and thrown their cards toward the muck. One landed on anothers hand-it was unprotected and had to be mucked-he claimed to have the nut flush for a $150-200 pot.

Thanks for clearing that up. I was trying to imagine how they would protect your cards from prying eyes, etc.

and I have been in games in poker rooms where if you dont use something to protect, ie a chip or your own little trinket, they will be folded...

Because most places want the cards on the table in front of your chips, they are out and vunerable.

Easiest thing is wait til your turn, look at cards and drop a chip on em if you gonna play the hand.

I played in a live tourney the other day... put a guy all in, he called. I show him my "Hooks"... he goes to turn his cards over, and he's got 3 CARDS IN HIS HAND!!!! WTF!!! Shocked Surprised Confused Someone mucked one of their cards right under his(slippery table) he didn't even notice! It took some convincing, but finally he understood that he couldn't win the pot. I felt a little bad... cause he had a winner! Embarassed Anyways... I'm willing to bet a card protector might of helped in this situation. Crazy huh? Laughing
