Tourney question - short stacked |

I just played in a home game tourney (I'm usually a cash game player). I was doing OK early but caught a run of cold cards and was getting blinded to death. Anyway, I had probably 6-8x the BB and got Ah9h so I decided it was time to make my move. I pushed in and got called by QQ. No help to either one of us and I'm gone. There were 6 people left (incl. me) at the time I made my move.
So here's my question to you more seasoned tourney players: At what point do you decide you're too short-stacked and you have to make a move? Did I push too soon?

Generally, I would say no. I start looking to push with premium cards or if I hit a good flop when I get around 10xBB, and with anything decent at around 7x or 8x. Seems to me that you made a good move.

I'm a cash game guy too, but if there weren't a lot of limpers that was a good time to push. A 9s has a lead on every hand expect for A T+ or a pocket pair. Since you were already in for a big blind it was a good move.

Nope, no other callers. QQ was the SB and BB folded after I pushed and SB called. I was in mid-position and it was folded around to me.
I agree with many others here when they say coin flips suck. I hate risking my stack on a 50/50 shot. Maybe that's why I don't like tourneys all that much.

1) It was not a coin flip he was about a 2:1 (lose:win)
2) You cannot factor the other guy's cards into this decision.

I know he was the favorite, but 2:1 is not overwhelming odds against me. But what I meant was that I hate pushing my chips unless I know I have a very good chance to win the pot. Although in tourneys you often have to do it.
